Make sure you understand the difference between a "work at home business" and a "work at home job". They are different.
Typically with a work at home business you will need to put in an initial investment to start and then you will most likely have to keep putting in of your own money to keep your business going, just like any other business you might start.
A work at home job is different. It's just like a regular job you are just doing it from your own home. You should never, ever pay a fee to get a work at home job! Not for materials, nothing. The only expenses you should have should be for equipment like a headset, highspeed internet, updated software. Legitimate companies will not charge you to work for them. Finding these companies can be an overwhelming task, but I have a good resource for you.... http://www.workathomedesk.com is a free site that has an excellent directory of companies that hire home workers and also has frequently updated job leads. Depending on yoru personal circumstances and experience, try Googling "At Home Call Center Agent", lots of reputable comapnies are hiring that way now to save money. The ones that come to mind are West At Home and Alpine Access, but there are others and they are legitimate. I actually called for a Toys R Us gift card balance once and I realized the lady had a quiet background and I asked if she was an at-home call center agent and she said yes. |

Most work from home "job's" only pay minimum wage. Not a sufficient amount of income to support yourself. If you really want to work from home and make a sufficient amount of income then I suggest you start your own home based business.
There are so many different home based business to start up. Most home based business cost under $500 to start. They have the same income opportunities for you as traditional businesses do, but without all the over head that they aqcuire.
When starting a business, their is no money at first. You have to build it up. No matter what business you get involved in. The more effort you put into it and how hard your willing to work it, will depend on when you start making a sufficient amount of income. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Some businesses are hard manual labor, while others are mainly phone and computer work. So these types of businesses are not "hard work" just "time work".
In home based businesses, depending on which one you get involved in, it usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks to start making an average income.Which is about the same time frame as a job. 4 to 6 weeks to increase that.
and 3 to 6 months to be self sufficient. This is based on the "time effort" part. If you put the time and effort into it you can be very successful. Most people start their business on the side if they don't have a cushion to live on while they build their business. Meaning they don't have a savings set aside. Most people don't. If you do, this will allow you to build your business much quicker. Most people have full time jobs and run their business on the side. When their business reaches the income level they desire, they put their normal jobs down and continue to build their business with or without help. Increasing their income volume "giving themselves a raise" per say. That part depends on your effort in the business you decide to do.
Not knowing what you like to do, I'm not sure who to refer you over to and get information from. I can tell you what my husband and I have for the past 6 years and refer you over to my blog that I created on Home Based Businesses on my 360 page. Your more then welcome to go and take a look for some more ideas. We have built our home based business and it supports our entire family of 6 (we have 4 children ages 10, 6, 3 and 1)
We got involved in the Telecommunications industry, like I said a little over 6 years ago. You save people money on services that they are already using and paying for, and offer them services that they don't have, but would like to. Every single month these people pay these bills that they are going to every month, you make a percentage. You get paid every single month for these services over and over again. This is a very profitable business to get involved in.

It really all depends on the type of work you are looking for. Being recently laid off, you fall into the growing number of people who put their faith in todays "work-force" only to be awakened by the fact that job security is an urban legend.
The best thing to do is really start looking at setting up some time of revenue generating business that you can run from home (part time) EVEN IF you are looking to get back into the traditional marketplace.
