We work from home, and I know many people who have home based businesses, as well as having jobs. The jobs that are home based pay minimum wage, home based business you have the same income opportunity as a traditional business without all the over head expenses. There are a lot of good web sites out there in many different industries. Literally thousands of ways to work from home. I don't think YA has a large space for emails to list every single solitary web site. You should get a lot of answers on here that have good opportunities. Go through each one and pick out the one that interests you the most.
I'm a dad and my wife is a mom, we have 3 kids ourselves, A lot of parents I know are in the telecommunications industry and travel industry. Some have more kids, and some have no kids. Going into business, it really doesn't matter if you have kids or not. The income opportunity is the same with or without children. It makes no difference.
I know of a really good article on home based business opportunities that has a lot of information as well as several different industries to look into. You can start from there and read through other yahoo answers and look through all of them as well.

If you are an accomplished typist - word processor and have recently visited your local city college or university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects. An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days work.

I do and have for little over 9 years. Since it seems that you are just getting your start into the whole work at home world, here are a couple tips.
First of all you need to realize that there are work from home jobs and home based businesses. Jobs do not cost any money, where as a business would most likely have some sort of start up costs etc.
That being said, I will offer a couple sites that may be helpful and will offer lots of great info into all aspects. Take your time and do your research before getting involved with any one thing. And ask questions. If someone can't answer your question up front and direct without a whole lot of run around, that will be a huge red flag and you'll want to look elsewhere.
Check out http://www.wahm.com You will find lots, and lots of great info there. Also check out the forums through the site. There are folders pertaining to many different aspects of wah, as well as many separate folders about the main different wah business opportunities available.
http://notesfromawannabewahm.blogspot.com Here she finds and shares the many different offers and opportunities that she runs across as she searches for ways to make money from home as well. You might be able to find something that looks interesting.

The answer will depend greatly on what you are looking for. If you want to be an employee, the most common work-at-home position in the U.S. is CSR or customer service representative. If the kids you want to be home with are young, that'll know you out of consideration, as they have strict 'no noise environment' conditions.
If you are looking for some type of business that you can do at home, your choices are much greater. A lot will depend on the business you choose, as to whether it can be done strictly at home, or if the requirement to see clients in person would be out of the question for you and your situation.
I know of one stay-at-home Dad who did telephone solicitations during home time and schedule his appointments for when his daughters would be at day care or with their grandmother. His flexible schedule allowed him to make the sales calls in person, by scheduling around his time with his daughters.
Some work can be done strictly online, but many factors can be involved such as your internet access. If you are limited to dial-up access, your online time will be less efficient.

I've been doing some work with www.elance.com the past week, all the work is home based, data entry, transcription etc. The only thing is you're competing against people from countries where the hourly rate of pay is a lot lower, so not sure if it would be worth it for you.
Also have a look at the jobs listed here, most are applicable to us,canada,europe, its quite good, thats where I found the elance link.

Its been updated today to include some Craft type jobs which can be done from home, mainly re-distribution, but it possible to make good money from it if you work hard.
So many online jobs are out there. In fact, to do any online job, you need not want to invest anything. Make sure, you dont pay anything to get jobs online.
