F.S.Plus | Does our entire church building need a fire alarm installed if we open a daycare? |
We are opening a daycare ministy at our church. The building does not have a fire alarm yet, but we need a fire alarm in the daycare section in order to open. Can we open the daycare if the fire alarm is only installed in the section where the daycare will be? We will install a fire alarm in the entire building later down the line, but now we can only do a small section. Will this prevent us from opening on time? |

you Will need a fire wall that separates the 2 also the total area needs fire alarms inspectors are veryyyy strict yes it will delay u if u do not have them |

There are two different entities with an interest in this question:
1. Your insurance company, who may require it because of increased liability thru the daycare operation.
2. Your local fire marshal/inspector.
You probably need to satisfy both of them, so I would ask both. |

It depends. If the daycare section of the building is being added onto the existing building, and you install a four hour firewall between the new structure and the old, then you don't have to bring the existing building up to code.
On the other hand, if you are using an existing part of the building, and converting it to use as a daycare (or if you are still adding on, but do not put the 4hr firewall in), then they will require you to bring the entire building up to code by installing a complete addressable fire alarm system with smoke detectors, pull stations, horn-strobes, possibly even a voice alarm.
The exact requirements vary - you should probably check with your local fire marshall or other authority having jurisdiction to find out exactly what they will be looking for, otherwise you can waste a lot of time and money. You might also want to talk to a local electrical engineer - they stay up to date on the latest code requirements. |

Yes you do according to the rules of the area you live in, a smoke alarm and fire alarm. Did you know if you have a fire/smoke alarm connected directly to the fire company it saves a lot of $$ on insurance. So there is your savings. |

Are you operating the daycare facility as a business? There may be additional zoning and building inspection requirements you need to satisfy. The fire marshal is going to be the most knowledgeable source for your inquiry, as well as the most difficult to satisfy. The insurance company may or not be helpful, but in either event they probably won't send an inspector, only ask you some questions over the phone. |
