Started off as an occasional buyer, now have my own business, so I guess I think it's great.
Some basic guidelines to ensure your experience is a good one:
- make sure the person you're buying from have a good level of feedback (I prefer 99% and upwards, over 100 feedbacks). Just check what their feedback is for, because they might have just bought 100 1p e-books in the last 2 days just to try and make themselves look legit.
- if it's a business seller (rather than personal) then you have more rights e.g. you have the right to return the goods within 7 days if you change your mind.
- while you've got more of a chance of getting a bargain with a private seller, trust your instincts - if it looks too good to be true, it almost certainly will be
- if someone's only used 'official' pics of an item, ask them to take some pics and send them to you, just to prove that they really have the item.
- always, always ALWAYS pay with Paypal if you have any chance that the transaction might not be genuine. If someone won't accept paypal, i always take that as a bad sign. You have no protection paying by any other means. Even with a novice seller, you'll get up to £150 protection, up to £500 with a more experienced, reputable seller (like me!)
It's great fun and almost always a great deal as long as you follow some basic guidelines and don't get too greedy (no-one sells a brand new Wii for £20!)

buying, check that the seller has a feedback score of 10 or over
they must have a 98% or more score for you to be insured with paypal.
Never send cash if in doubt dont bid, expensive item ask for a LANDLINE phone no,
If you get scamed report it to the police as it is fraud, they have broke the law and you want them charged.some police forces will try and forget it but keep on their case.
Ebay will not give the police or anyone else much info quoting the Data protection act.
I always go to streetmaps.co.uk and check address with the postcode if it dosent match then dont buy and report it to ebay.
99.9% of ebayers are honest its just the odd one so in truth you can bid with confidince, just be senseable. |

Dont use their postal service...its cheaper going to the post office.
Always factor in the charges you get to the prices you charge.
Always offer a returns policy as most people prefer dealing with someone who offers this.
Be honest.
How you say your going to post the item..do it that way...i get fed up of paying for 1st class recorded and its sent 2nd class normal post. |

Deal honestly. Beware of scammers, both buyers and sellers. I've had both to deal with. Accept that you may loose either goods or money or both occasionally ( a lot less than in a 'high street' shop though). Check others feedback rating and use your own judgement on whether to deal with them or not. Remember there are fees to pay to ebay, sometimes its easy to forget these. And if using their paypal system, again fees, (extortionate) and the delay (not too bad) of transferring money from it to your own account. |

A total cockup from the start and they expected me to still cough up money for their systems balls up.
I told them where to stick their charges and complained bitterly and you know what, the cheeky f*ckers still tried to take payment by Direct Debit despite me telling them that the item I tried to list wasn't and when it did the listing was incorrect.
They banned me from buying and selling |

I know a few people who have been stung by scammers on ebay. It can be a dangerous place if you don't know what your doing. I tend to stay away from it now, too much hassle. |

EBAY has been good to me. Always check up on the seller though, make sure they're legit by reading through their comments. One major thing to look out for these days though is shipping costs. EBAY sellers gouge on shipping costs sometimes, don't be sucked in! |
