EBay shipping and handling charge question?
can i charge slightly more for shipping and handling then it will actually cost me?

Lebanese_Mafia
I always get charged $20 shipping, then when the item arrives the invoice says that shipping cost $5. Everybody overcharges their shipping on ebay.

Yes but you really need to disclose this up front. This is really easy to do - when you list the item it will give you several options for shipping, one being flat rate shipping. Choose this option and type the amount you wish to charge.

The "handling" charge you're costing people is understandable if it's only a small amount, but it needs to be included in what you tell people you need to charge for "shipping and handling". It should never be a surprise.

Occassionally I see people put "contact seller for details" with no flat shipping charge listed, but I don't recommend this. If you're planning to charge such a flat rate, just tell them what it is - then they can decide whether they want to bid or not right then and there is no dispute later.

S F
yes you can but it will turn people away the more the shipping cost is.

Probably most sellers do just that. Some of the shipping & handling charges are through the roof.

Don't charge too much more if you do. One of the biggest turnoffs for potential buyers is seeing S&H charges that are unreasonably high.

runs_with_scissors
Yes, and you should.

Most sellers charge more for shipping and handling than the actual cost.Who is to say how much to charge for handling?

Excessive Shipping Charges Policy

Sellers may charge reasonable shipping and handling fees to cover the costs for mailing, packaging, and handling the items they are selling. While eBay will not prescribe exactly what a seller may or may not charge, eBay will rely on member reports and its own discretion to determine whether or not a seller’s shipping, handling, packaging, and/or insurance charges are excessive. Shipping and handling fees may not be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.

Sellers who want to be sure they are in compliance with this policy may charge actual shipping costs plus actual packaging materials cost (or less).

In addition to the final listing price, sellers are permitted to charge:

Actual Shipping cost: This is the actual cost (i.e. postage) for shipping the item.

Handling Fee: Actual packaging materials costs may be charged. A handling fee in addition to actual shipping cost may be charged if it is not excessive.

Insurance: Sellers offering insurance may only charge the actual fee for insurance. No additional amount may be added, such as “self-insurance”. Sellers who do not use a licensed 3rd party insurance company may not require buyers to purchase insurance. This is a violation of state law.

Tax: Only actual applicable federal, state, country, city, VAT, and equivalent taxes may be charged.

For cross border transactions, sellers may not collect tariffs and duties. However, buyers may be responsible for actual, applicable tariffs, and duties as requested by respective country laws.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

let me tell you, ebay is really cracking down on excessive shipping!

Shipping and handling means you can charge whatever you want. It will be disclosed at the auction site.

you can but you should list what you plan to charge so people wont be surprised

Everything is disclosed up front before a bid is made. At that end when all is said and done its the combined amounts that are the cost of the item. Whats the difference if you put 19.95 cost and Free shipping or .99 cost and 18.95 shipping. if consumers would use the lowest cost+shipping sorter most of the time the person with hgher shipping is not the highest priced item. this is a free country, and buyers should be able to determine what they want to bid on on their own. No one is making you bid on an item that has 19.95 for shipping. Don't bid! If you do bid, don't bitch when its charged to your total - DUMBASS. I hate those buyers. One way ebay gets more money (and do they really need more money?, thosegreedy bastards with all their fees) is charging you fees on your cost, it's cheaper to start a bid at .99. no fees usually. If I lower shipping, I pass what I have to pay extra on cost fees onto my cost. So ultimately the buyer ends up paying more for the item, then if they bought it with the higher shipping. Ex if I charge normal shipping of 4.95 when I would normally charge 8.95 I will then, instead of starting auction at .99 start it at 5.99. 4 more dollars so that remains the same either way but ($8.95 is $8.95), I add an extra dollar, cuz now ebay will make more on insertion fee and their % at the end. Ebay wants you to put everything in cost..they get more that way. The bottom line is the bottom line...and my customer...regardless of what they pay for shipping 75% of the time gets the item for less then the same item up for auction...in closing..a rose by any other name.... but 20.95 no matter how you break it apart..is still 20.95. Buyers need to look at bottom line, total cost. thats what it boils down to...what you are paying total. So quit looking at the shipping. You think when someone puts free shipping, you are getting free shipping. You are a Dumbass if you believe that. You are paying it all in the fixed price or starter auction price. Educate yourselves please. And don't bid on my stuff and bitch about the shipping cost!!!!

jsutbcuz
Can I ask why you purchased the items? I was very upfront with my price and shipping. Nothing hidden. If you felt shipping was too high what made you purchase anyway? I bet at that point you were looking at total price until ebay got you fixated on the shipping, by asking to rate it. Ebay is very smart, and who ever thought up that rating was a genius! The bottom line of this transaction is the total price. Ebay has to separate the two because they can not charge fees on shipping. So they push for the free shipping, so everything goes in the cost, that way they make more. The buyer is usually very happy with their purchase, then Ebay does the one last thing to ensure that they will keep control over their seller- they give you the buyer a chance to rate, and wave that shipping question in front of you. Now, normally someone is not thinking about that as an individual cost, until ebay says to look at it. Ebay is a big, faceless, no compassion business...bottom line profit. Yet, they manage to turn things around to look as though they are looking out for the buyers in this, they are not, they are looking out for themselves. You are the alarm bells, telling them - hey! Looky here is another one that is not giving you all that's due you. Ebay owns paypal, gets a fee because they insist sellers use it, they get a fee on listings, they get a fee when it sells..every time you turn around ebay is taking. You have to see the whole picture and understand that a small fish gets swallowed up in ebay. I see bottom line, I see what is the total a seller is going to pay...it doesn't matter where the numbers lie in that. 4.95 and free shipping or .95 and 4.00 shipping. But it matters to ebay. Because they cant fee that shipping cost. So in essence you are manipulated by them to be their minion and sound the alarm, by rating shipping which by now is all you see. Feedback is what counts as a seller, what you write is how I'm rated for all to see. I have a 100% rating. The star rating is used only for ebay to control the seller. It doesn't matter to me how you rate me, I just want you to be happy with your purchase, both in quality and in pricing. How you rate my shipping is very important to ebay, and with that they can control how I sell, and my profit margin and your costs.

hottopic
I agree with jsutbcuz I dont' understand why there are issues with buyers, as jsutbcuz stated they can see the shipping cost so there are no surprises and sellers don't email ebay customers to buy there items...it does not matter what the seller paid to ship...buyers that can add should be able to make the decision whether to buy by adding the amount of the item and then the shipping. I no longer give sellers medium scores on shipping since i knew what the charges were they did not make me buy the item...Ebay needs to take this rating system for shipping and handling off..it makes no sense. And again as jsutbcuz stated ebay does not take fees from the shipping amount (paypal does) just what the item sales for, that is why they make such a big deal of telling sellers to offer free shipping their items will sell much better...right...ebay gets a bigger piece of the action...they do quite well with their fees and i don't have a problem paying their fees just keep out of the business of making sellers that try to make a living on ebay what they can and can't charge and then issue their punishment if they think that shipping is too high...Out of country buyers are some of the biggest problems,,,they get their package and then look at the shipping cost and cry out about what they paid...they knew from the get go how much shipping is....ebay should be fun for everyone and not start running like our government is running the country..people are trying to survive...pay their bills,,,feed their family...and selling on ebay does allow for a wide audience to see your items for sell, just get rid of the bad apples that play stupid after they receive their items...stop allowing them to leave negatives for shipping...Ebay should police some of the feedback i have read on other sellers,,,vicious,,,nasty buyers berating the seller for a few dollars difference in the shipping cost.
