Hi i am a member of Ebay since 2000 and i can tell you that if you are intelligent, hard-working, patient and consistent with and original plan or idea, then you can certainly make a fortune on Ebay.
But the real problem is that most of us lack in some of the above mentioned qualities. Like any other business this Ebay business takes time to gather momentum since you have to first build your image as a reliable and responsible seller and notch up good ratings.
If you wish to make a fortune on Ebay just follow my simple steps:-
1. Get a small but a very unique and lovely product to sell from the local manufacturers. Remember your this choice will determine the amount of fortune you make. Ensure that the product is the best in quality and your first time customers just love it and tell it to other buyers.
2. Now when you list your product for sale just ensure that you include a high resolution picture of your product from atleast 2 or 3 angles so that the prospective buyer knows what he/she is buying and make up his mind more accurately. Also describe the product you are selling in great detail and mention all of its possible features and uses.
3. Be very careful that you clearly mention accurate Handling and Delivery charges in your payment terms and conditions and clearly enumerate the ways of payments permitted by you and also the warranties and return methods if available.
4. Now clearly include Your decent profit percentage in the cost of the items which you want to sell. Remember it is this profit which will pay for all your expenses and which will keep you up and going in times of tough competition.
5. Ensure that you include some good sounding personal notes with all the items you send to the buyers. Take care of the packing standards. Offer your customers speedy problem resolution so that they are not dissatisfied and do not give you negative ratings as this may cause much damage to your image as a seller. Maintain regular contact with your old buyers and offer them your new products on regular basis.
6. Generally it is seen that if you have an offline sales channel, then ebay can complement your sales very effectively and can result in generous revenues from the online sales channel. Just keep the postage and handling costs in check and just document your offerings in very clear terms.
If you follow all these steps and try to be innovative, creative and caring then you can certainly make a fortune on ebay but with some patience and not overnight as many people may suggest.
Take Care.
Bye. |

I know folks that made good money on ebay. They have a successful offline business and decided to try ebay. Note: I could quit my job on the money they make, but to them it's only pocket change. Five figure pocket change.
P.S. Yes, I tried it. Did good, however, there are cycles. You might have to hold on to inventory longer than anticipated or closeout liquidate and try later. |

They CAN be very profitable. If you find a niche that needs filling, and you are willing to devote the time and energy.
I have sold;
a 1920's toaster $375
a photograph book of Martha's Vinyard 112
Antiques clay poker chips 225
1950's "Skin Diver" Magazine 105
"Jazzy" Electric Wheelchair 850
I have sold too many to list. However, am NOT willing to devote the necessary time at this point. I believe I will again in the near future. |

It's like any get rich quick scheme if that's what you use it for.
If you have an easily shippable item you want to sell, you are advertising it around the whole world. Yes, you can definitely sell anything and usually you will get a good price. So obviously if you follow the rules and make sure you describe your item clearly without trying to sneak anything by anyone and ship it carefully and quickly you will develop feedback that will bring you more customers.
There's no mystery about it. If you can find an item you have access to at less that what you can sell it for on E-bay you will make a profit, and like any other business the more you sell the more you'll make from it. There's just no disputing it. But if you're trying to sell something that isn't worth buying you will fail. Simple as that.
I bought and sold returned items from department stores. I put full descriptions of each item stating any flaws clearly and shipped them immediately, then occasionally had to refund money because people don't read and its not worth arguing and my feedback was perfect. I stopped after a while but that's only because I lost access to the items I was buying but I definitely made a profit and it barely took any of my time. If I come up with another product I'll start selling again.
On the other hand, you'll hear a lot of things about drop shippers and the like that are rip offs and it's best to avoid that. |

You can clearly make money on ebay, but it's unlikely that you'll make a fortune. See the urban legends reference from earlier posts, but there are plenty of people who buy and sell things on ebay to make money. It's been profiled in Forbes, Business Week, etc. |

well I quit my job and started an ebay business. I am only 17 and started this under my mothers name at 15, So it is true yes. The millions in a short time and things like that is only if you are selling cars and real estate on there, however I have made $6000 in 2 years with only selling clothes, movies, games, shoes and other small items. I do not do it to buy a house and live off of, but the extra money for things that are cluttering my house really comes in handy. Ebay is not all a breeze however, Its hard work, bank accounts, faulty buyers and sellers, filing complaints, shipping every day and sometimes you are out of money when you list items that end up not selling. I would not reccomend dropping a good job to do this, but at night or in your spare time, heck yes. |

I make about $800 a month on ebay |

I make a living off selling things on Ebay. My name on there is melbourneman so you can check it out. I am not getting rich but I am making about $3500 a month profit, which is my pay. It does not sound like much but it is more than I made when I was a high school teacher and I don't have to put up with anyone's crap.
I am moving soon and I want to get a job just for the social aspect, but I will not stop selling on Ebay even if I don't make as much. It is not as much effort as you may think. and if you divide the time I put in to the money I pocket, it is about $22 an hour. So even if I do half as much sales, it is still worth it.
I started my Ebay business with $50 and kept re-investing the money I made. After 3 months I quit my thankless job with Sprint Cell phones because I realized that if I doubled my efforts on Ebay I would be making twice as much.
But as far as getting rich? I doubt it. Remember, I put in 40 hours on this and I really don't have time to do more than I already do. I would have to hire people, which would cost me more money and I probably would lose money by doing that. Between getting the goods, taking the pics, making the ads, packaging and mailing the items, answering emails... |

No it's legitimate.
A lot of gamers (Everquest, Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies) that post goods routinely for sale on Ebay have quit their day jobs and subsist solely on their income from private sales and Ebay. |

I think money can be made on ebay but you pretty much have to have really good contacts to be able to buy things at a low enough price. Most things on ebay go for 1/2 - 3/4 of what they would retail so you have to get items at about 1/4 cost to make a profit. You always see people looking for wholesalers but really you need be a vaild business to buy from reputable place. They don't just sell to anyone and why would they with the demand?
Personally, I love ebay for just clearing out old junk in my house. I get more money for items then I would from a garage sale and they almost always sell if priced low enough. The downfall is time...time to clean item up, take the perfect picture (this can be difficult), design the perfect ad, calculate shipping, answer questions, pack/label and then wait in line at the post office & fill out forms.
I can't see anyone quitting their job to sell things on ebay unless they can
1. get goods that sell and are in demand
2. Buy good at a very minimum of 1/4 of the price.
If you can find a hot selling item for 1/10 of the price and can find unlimited quantity (not likely) then yes you could make a fortune easily.
There are many crooks in wholesale as well. Also many wholesalers are selling fake illegal copies of things. You pretty much have to have real person contacts IMO.
I have personally looked into this and decided against it. |

They should call eBay, InternetGarageSale.com. I find it very useful to get rid of items I am not using, but I would say a very small percentage of people are actually making a living off of it. |

Most likely imaginary. You might get lucky here or there but PEOPLE SCAM! Do not buy anything that says "this is the best deal, you can't pass it by". You have to only buy from people that allow Paypal. If you do try to be rich off ebay, it is hard because many people want to do what you want to do but ebay is so popular that the prices can get higher than you want them to be while buying. But that's the good thing about selling. Maybe try Yahoo Auctions. |

Well earnings are real but saying that people are quitting job may not be 100% true for all ebay sellers. some may have opted for it but not all. Earning extent depends on
1. Your product
2. Your pricing
3. Your presentation
4. Your landing price in hand of customer
5. Your responses to queries
I advocate the earning but extent may vary |

Somewhat real...A friend of mine has a company set up on ebay and makes pretty good money. However, I think the number of people who are making millions on ebay is less than the number of people losing money. If you have the right business model, you can make money. |

Cost money to make money. Buy wholesale then makeup the product bu below retale after ebay/paypal coat profit. This one person has memory stick pro duo's out 512Mb for $20 with shipping out the store and pay expect about $50+ tax
But you have to drop a few thousand in memory before you get a discount. I would do it but no startup to buy at wholesale prices. |

For the most part, imaginary. You'd have to have lots of time, money, connections, and resources. And if you have all that, why would you waste your time on ebay? You could open your own business or invest in stocks or something much more stable... like land, and probably already have a fortune. Sure, you can make some money on Ebay, and some people even support themselves solely through Ebay auctions, but a fortune? No way.
It's like people who try to make a fortune by Day-trading. Yeah, you may have a chance to make a fortune... if you have a fortune to spend. There is always a high risk factor. What if no-one buys your stuff on ebay at the price you want them to? Then you're screwed. |
