Nothing to worry about, Dollybird. Have a look at this article from The Telegraph, and the paragraph about 'the last-minute flurry'.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xml=/connected/2007/05/01/nosplit/dlebay01.xml
It's very standard for the vast majority of bids to come in the last hour, even the last 30 seconds. Many people have now caught onto the 'Snipe' software way of buying. These are pieces of software that will automatically put your bid in in the last few seconds, and so doesn't give anyone else the opportunity to put in a higher bid if they decide they want it.
Hammersnipe is one of the most common - have a look and you can try for free (up to 3 auctions per week). Beware though, it's addictive! And it's also well worth the subscription fee if you buy regularly and DON'T want to be sat by your computer 24 hours a day just so you don't miss out on THAT item

People watch ebay items and if you are experienced, will bid on at the last minute. A popular item can double in price in the last 30 minutes of the auction close. Plus people use Sniper - a tool that will bid for you in the last few seconds of the auction end. |

The majority of bids are placed at the end of the auction. Those other people may have been watching the item all week. If the bids are below £100 you can see who else has bid by clicking on 'bids'. You can also check what else they have bid on (ie. anything else from the same seller). I disagree with bids over £100 being hidden. Ebay do it 'to stop unwanted contact' from other sellers offering their goods to the underbidders apparently.
It is more usual than unusual for this to happen.
I always place my bid in the last 15 seconds and if I can't do it myself I use a free 'snipe' tool which bids for you about 10 seconds from the end of the auction.. I have put the link below if you would like to use it. You get 3 free bids per week.
PS. I have 725 feedback on ebay and have used it for years. |

there are a lot of people out there that use the 'watch this item ' option, and as the bidding comes towards the close they get the low bids in.
beats bidding high to start with and watching ur money get cranked up.
also unless the seller has an alterego i think ebay has failsafes to stop you bidding up your own items.
ps. prepare to be dissapointed more than elated and you will survive ;)
safe bidding,,enjoy |

Hi. I have an eBay store so I will try to help you. The seller is not allowed and cannot bid on his or her own items. There are a few that still do by getting more than one account but that is far and few between. If eBay ever finds out that someone has done this they will be banned from eBay. That being said. What probably happened is this. A person can add an item to their watch list. This means that they are watching to see what the price gets to before they bid. It is a way for buyers to keep the price down and not cause a bidding war at the beginning of the auction. A lot of people will wait until the last minute so that they can get the best price available. Before you place a bid you need to first research the item. Someone else on eBay may have it cheaper than the one that you are looking at. When you find one with a good price you need to check out the seller. Read their feedbacks. For instance on my feedback I have over 300 feedbacks with 1 negative and 2 neutral. On those three items I have responded to the feedback and stated what had occured with the customer so that future customers would know the entire story. If they have numerous negative or neutral feedbacks for the same reason DO NOT BUY from them. It is also a good idea to start a PayPal account. You will be protected with your purchases then. In case you pay for an item and you do not receive it. I have a book listed at http://shops.half.ebay.com/tnthauler66_W0QQ that is a guide to buying selling and collecting anything on eBay. Have fun. I have both sold and bought on Ebay for a few years. We cannot bid on our own items. The reason there was interest at the end is that most people like the thrill of the bidding and it is normal for people to come in at the last minute to see if they can get a bargain. Also, if you put a bid in too early then someone will always come along at the last minute and outbid you because they want the item. It happens all the time and is just part of the bidding process - nothing suspicious at all. |

A lot of people snipe auctions -- bidding at the very last minute, often the very last 2 seconds. Sniping is a popular sport on eBay as it makes it all the more exciting.
Buyers do it because they don't want to show their "hand" so to speak early on. Plus the adrenalin of seeing if you could win the auction and no other snipers are waiting in the wings
Sellers love those who bid at the last minutes because that means the price goes up. Well, even 11 hours before the auction.
There are sellers who bid on their items in order to jack up the price - and that is against eBay rules. But there are a lot of buyers who may have previously watched the item and bid at the last day or last minutes of the auction. It's all part of the game and fun of eBay |

People who sell on ebay dont have time to do stupid stuff like that. Many people bid at the last minute or hour so that they can get the cheapest and fastest way of winning. If everyone kept bidding throughout the whole 7 days the bid was around it would obviously be much more expensive. the trick is to track an item you want and then check the price about 3 hours before the bidding ends and start bidding then. Thats the smartest way anyway, Good luck! |

The seller cant bid on their own item, its impossible. But they can get others to bid for them e.g friends. Its called shill bidding and it aint allowed.
All items go up just before the end of sale, its just the way it goes. |

You could click on the # of bids to double check, but I know that it's not possible to use your own screen name to bid on an item you posted. If they're tricky they's make another account, but eBay is watching everything and they'd take the listing off if they thought something bad was going on. |

Thats quite normall as people dont bid early nowdays just incase it causes them to have to make extra bids to win the item. Usually you will find this causes a bid frenzy right at the last moment. why mae say 10 bids over 10hrs driving the price up when you can bid last few min say 3x that doesnt push the overal price up if you catch me drift. Try also looking at the bid history link to see the other bidders.... GLuck |

There is always the possibility that there are unscrupulous people on ebay.
Just follow this simple rule;
Only bid what you feel is fair and can afford, and don't get drawn into a bidding war. |

a lot of ppl wait until the last second to bid to be sure that they get it -- not a lot of other bid on things early on...they usually wait until the end
also it would be REALLY stupid for someone to bid on their own stuff because if no one else bidded they would have to pay for something that they already own.
but i dont even think its possible |

You can't bid on your own products, but some unscruplous Ebay sellers have theirs friends bid on an item to bring up the price. This is illegal in Ebay. By the way, if you want to know a way to get money back every time you buy something from Ebay and other popular stores, then send me an email. |

They (sellers) usually work in groups of two and more and between them they hike the prices.
They usually know when an "outsider" is bidding and they hike their prices accordingly. They have an expert who determines the way the bidding is going. Even if you e mail one he sounds separate from the others. I have seen them work before. I wont say there are no innocent buyers and sellers but the people who make money are usually in the know.
But my logic tells me that buying anything in an Auction is rather silly because in most cases the two most important aspects of buying are lost and they are 1. Control of Cost of Goods
2. quality of goods.
the buyer has no clue about these two things which defeat the object completely
Also another thing I've noted about auctions is that the goods can be bought straight over the counter usually at the same price or lower with less hassle. And comparable goods may be bought much cheaper. there is also the "bargain at auction" stories you hear but rest assured these are very rare and a lot of them ar fabricated. |
