Yeah it's a scam. I had a similar problem on craiglist.org (free classifieds from around the world). I was selling my old drum set and this one guy emailed me and told me to take the post off the site becuz he was willing to pay me the full price when I said after the price "or best offer." I asked him "Don't you want to see it before you buy it?" and he said the pictures I posted looked like it was in good condition. He sent me a check in the mail without letting me know and he told me to cash it in my bank account. Strange thing was though, that he sent a check for $1500 when I was selling the drum set for $300. I emailed him and told me he wasn't thinking when heh wrote the check cuz it was $1200 less than that. He told me to cash the check again and immediately wire the $1200 to his "shipper" in the state of Washington (I live in Illinois). I actually thought about it and then my family asked me whey he couldn't just wire the money to his shipper himself. Then I read up on scams like mine and what they do is they send you a check for way more than the product is worth, tell you to cash the check and keep the money for the price of the product, then wire the rest of the money to their "shipper" who is supposed to arrange to have the item picked up and shipped to the "buyer." It turns out that they ask you to wire the money immediately after cashing the check because while the check has been wired to their "shipper", it takes your bank a couple days to figure out that the check is fraudulent, even CASHIER'S CHECKS! I emailed the guy telling him to just send me a check for the exact amount and it was his responsibility to get money to his shipper and if he gave me his mailing address, I would mail the $1500 check back to him uncashed. He refused to give me his address and just persisted on telling me to cash the check. Finally, after about a month of this crap back and forth I told the guy that I was smarter than he was and I knew he was a scammer and that I was calling the check fraud department at the FBI and they would be able to trace his mailing address through the AOL email account of his that I would give them. He stopped emailing me after that.

In your case, the guy probably has a fraudulent bank account or something. Don't mess around with it and never EVER ship out of the country unless the person MAILS you CASH!

SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!! Just ignore it or forward the email to eBay's customer service. DO NOT log in to your PayPal or eBay account using any link that you find in an email. ALWAYS type in those addresses yourself or you may find that someone else now has access to your accounts.

ruuk
Yes, it is a scam. The email message from Paypal probably isn't really from Paypal.

Cassor
scam.

whatever you do, do NOT respond to the email and do NOT click on to any link on the email.

alert ebay and paypal by logging onto their official web sites or send the email as an attachment to their official customer service addresses.

I am an ebay retailer and here is what you do.

1) never ever log into your ebay or paypal acount through an email link.

2) Go to your eaby and paypal account directly.

If you sold the item your ebay account will reflect it. if there is an issue in paypal it will also show up as a despute in your paypal.

good luck

SCAM, disregard it. It is from a PayPal clone and not PayPal.
Only accept payment directly from a winning bidder, always.
Verify payment, insure that it really is PayPal when you take payment

Hello Mark,

I am afraid Ebay is not perfect and there are some there whose intention it is to try to con genuine members.

If your item is still listed on Ebay and the auction has not ended then I cannot see how this person can have bought it.

Also if he has paid through Paypal, they must have a record of it.

When an item is paid via Paypal, the buyer agrees to pay, Paypal check their account to ensure the money is there and start the process of withdrawing that payment from the buyers bank account or Paypal account.

They then send you confrimation that this has been done and it is OK for you to send the item to the buyer.

My advice is to contact both Paypal and Ebay about this.

Tell Paypal to provide you with details of the payment they have received from the 'buyer' and also tell them that this item has not been bought buy them. If the auction is still live, let them know that too.

Contact Ebay and inform them of what is happening, give them the details of the item being auctioned, description, item number etc and ask Ebay to investigate it urgently.

Good luck.

Yes, sounds very dodgy to me. Don't act upon it, you are not obliged to send the item as they didn't bid on it or win it. There are lots of scams going about like this so don't fall victim to another. Just send the item to whoever wins it and make sure they pay up first.

Also, report this ocurrance to Ebay.

Scam , the paypal message is most likely from the same Nigerian scam.

PepsiLime
For certain it's a scam. The e-mail from paypal isn't from paypal, but the scam artist in Nigeria hoping that you will click on a link that will take you to a bogus paypal website that the scam artist has set up to get all your paypal information.

orangesforme2002
Yup, this is a scam. When you send the item you will never get the money.

Maybe you like to wait and sell your phone to people with lots of good ratings or are willing to meet up to deal.

saraeh_w
yes yes yes, anything from "nigeria" or "south africa" or countries over there are scams. I'm not saying that everything from there is but in most cases it is a scam and if your three day auction isn't even over yet, that should be a heads up. They have a way of showing as if they've paid you but it will never really go into your account. These Nigerians are trying to do that on places like craigslist for more expensive things like x box, and playstions. Be very careful. If anything contact ebay if your auction isn't intended to be over yet.

post the link to your auction...let us look at it. If it is still going on, just don't worry about it...sounds like a scam to me. Go into your paypal account and look and see if you got a payment.

OPEN A NEW WINDOW to do this...DON'T click on a link in the scam e-mail to check it!!!!
