Carat or karat (abbreviation: ct or kt) is a measure of the purity of gold and platinum alloys. In the United States and Canada, the spelling karat is usually used for the measure of purity, while carat refers to the measure of mass (see Carat). As a measure of purity, one carat is one twenty-fourth purity by weight:
X karats = 24 Mg over Mm (that's a fraction)
where
X is the karat rating of the material,
Mg is the mass of pure gold or platinum in the material, and
Mm is the total mass of the material.
Therefore 24-carat gold is pure gold (99.99%), 12-carat gold is 50% purity, etc.
The carat system is increasingly being complemented or superseded by the millesimal fineness system in which the purity of precious metals is denoted by parts per thousand of pure metal in the alloy.
The most common carats used for gold in bullion, jewellery making and goldsmithing are:
24 carat (millesimal fineness 999)
22 carat (millesimal fineness 916)
20 carat (millesimal fineness 833)
18 carat (millesimal fineness 750)
16 carat (millesimal fineness 625)

basically the higher karat it is the more gold is in it, gold is too soft as a metal itself so it is used in an alloy so 14k gold has less gold in it than 18k, though they say that 14k is preferred because the 18k is too soft and fragile |

All your replies are spot on, 9ct is 9 parts pure gold, 18ct, 18 parts gold, the higher it goes, the softer the metal , the colour also changes the higher the carat. |

The higher the karat is the less other metal is in it. 10 Karat gold has filler in it, 24 karat gold does not and it is softer. |

The difference between all of the different karats is the amount of additives that are in the gold. 10 karat having the lowest amount of gold, then on up to 14, then 18, 21, 24. |

There are 24 parts to a carat. Thus 9 carat gold is 9/24 th's Gold, which is 37.5% gold, hence the Hallmark 375, an alloy with other metals added to increase strength and possibly colour. 18 carat gold, contains 18/24ths or 75% gold, hence the 750 hallmark, and looks rather more buttery than typical 9ct gold. 22 and 24 carat are available, and some 14 is too. You pay more for the higher gold content, but lose out on durability - Gold is heavy but soft, and such jewellery as rings are easily scratched in 18 or 22 ct. |

There is no such thing as pure gold. The closest you might get is 999.99% gold. The rest is a alloy of copper and other metals.
Now the purest gold you can get is 24 karat i.e 999.99%
it goes down in scale so 8 Karat gold really contains a tiny amount of gold and most of the mass is the alloy that we learned about earlier. |
