I'm looking to start my own business but am a little unsure about how I can finance it. Let's say for instance that i need to borrow around £50,000 to kick off the business, however I don't own my own home, so does this mean I will be unable to get a loan?
Assuming I can get a loan under such circumstances, what would be the consequences if the business failed and I defaulted? |

I dont know about the UK but in America there are different types of business you can set up with their own tax and financially liabilities... corporation, partnership, LLC, etc. While they look like certain ones will protect you, many loans are still secured with an entrepreneur's personal assets anyway so make sure you know what name you sign for loans. If you are looking for a loan and worried about failure, I suggest you don't look for a loan. True entrepreneurs would rather live in their cars and eat canned ravioli every night than give up their dreams of their own businesses. See if your area has any government programs set up for entrepreneurs for support and funding. Here in the USA, we have the Small Business Administration (SBA). |

in general terms most lenders look at two things
1 repayment potential
2 the assets if it goes wrong
if you have no assets in the business it is difficult to lend against
some lenders will lend a proportion but initially as equity - this then gets repaid and the equity reduces as it is paid off,
you will need to have strong cashflow to get lenders interest
I would advice to get someone to believe in you and cut a deal (at Discovery beach we call them parainvestors) this way the risk is reduced and the finance requirement is lowered, it makes it easier to attract and investor, |

Depending on the business, different things would happen. Speaking in UK context, a Limited company has limited liability meaning the government can only take the business assets. I think with new business' a Limited or LTD company is the safest because you don't risk loosing your house or assets such as car.
If you wanted a loan, the best place to go would be the bank. Draw up a business plan and a financial chart (forgot exact name) showing your predicted sales, they should be realistic and accurate to ensure you get the loan. You also require assets, if your business has no assets, its like giving away 50,000 and not getting it back.
Another way of financing your business would be to make it a PLC, public limited company. This means that anyone can buy shares in your business, Manchester united was a PLC untill malcom glasier bought all the shares and turned it to Private limited. A private limited means your Family and Friends are the only ones that can buy shares, that may be a good method of rasing finance if you want to keep control of the business.
Remember with a PLC and Private Limited Company, if you have share holders, you have to give a DIVIDEND or a good reason to withhold money (expansion). Starting a business is very, very complex and requires alot of thought. Hopefully with the right questions you can be a successful entrepeneur.

You'll find that many successful business got successful precisely because the owners had to wheel-and-deal cause they couldn't get a loan. A loan is burdensome. Maybe start a smaller business where you don't need an immediate 50K startup.. and always insist on payment immediately.. not any 30 day rubbish.
You'd be very unlikely to get a loan of £50k without any assets. Lenders aren't stupid enough to loan a person that much, and who (with respect) obviously hasn't had much past success given he has no assets.. and who would be free to abscond or default without fear. However.. borrowing is for losers anyway. |
