Looking for simple grass roots ways to promote my small photography business. Would like to do some type of event where they could bring their children, family, pets, etc. to be photographed. Any other promotion ideas? Any good experiences? |

A couple of ideas - (1) Get hold of the local Humane Society and see if they would be interested in doing some sort of fund raiser where people could come and have their pictures taken with their pets for a small donation to the Humane Society (from which you would get a cut or just do it for publicity and hand out your card).
(2) I know a guy who did a cool thing just as a hobby and ended up with a second business. Go to your local Little League or Soccer or Football games and take action shots of the kids and hand out your card with the information of where the parents can see the pictures. This guy set up a website where the parents can log on and see the pictures and then can order some if they want to. He has it protected from anyone being able to just print the pictures from there (I don't know how you do that but it is worth checking into). Anyway, parents love to see pictures of their star athletes in action and will order copies to send to grandparents, etc. He has even been hired now by different teams to do team pictures and/or to take pictures of certain games. It has turned out great for him. |

a portrait day, ask people along say you will take 1 picture free of charge and they only have to pay for it to be printed ect! if they liek you(which they will!) they will come back! out doors on a freild would be a great place some lovely bright shots !!(: |

if you can afford the price tag, advertise on your local cable service. they have various pricing available and you will be able to reach lots of households. also another good avenue is those flyers that go out in the cable bills, that could be a cheaper route and then there is back of receipts from your grocery store. also valu-pack has those packets of coupons, etc. news paper. good luck to you |

In my community they have a "children's arts" festival. They have a stage with kids shows, booths where kids can make masks, get face painting, make crafts etc (staffed by volunteers from the college art departments & teachers), they have a pet dress up competition, small petting zoo, etc. etc. They have music & a story telling set up as well.
You could have a booth offering candids & photos in cute costumes as well as examples of your work & a drawing for a portrait sitting. |

Most of the answers you have are fine. Here's another suggestion. Try your local retirement center or nursing home. There are always birthday parties where the old timer would like his or her photo taken so they can send them to family out of town. Everyone wants to be remembered, even those with less time than the average person. If you are interested in starting a business, this is another good location to get willing subjects.
Do you use a digital system and carry a printer with you? That is clearly the way to go right now. Printers are very inexpensive and once you learn the techniques, you can turn out great portraits with a very reasonable profit margin. |

Taking photos of families is fun. I do this at nursing homes, daycares, and other organizations. I do this as a way to help these organizations raise money. For example if you contact a nursing home in your town and let them know who you are what you do and that you want to help them raise money for their activities department I know they will want to have your help. You do have to decide on the right pricing and what percentage of the sales you will give them. I hope this helps. I lived in a small town. The local photographer took pictures at local events where children were involved. Parade, ball games. Pictures, wallet size, were then posted in a store window, right on Main Street. Included was the Photograper's phone number. That is how he built his business. |

I know alot of photography studios especially the newer or smaller companies here in Kansas City area advertise on Craigslist. You can find good deals, free pics, or people starting their portfolio. Great way to advertise your work. |

Try going to a local daycare. The photographer that normally shoot at daycares charge alot. This would introduce you to lots of children which would translate to lots of families.
