Anything you sell will have start up costs. Even if you sell air, you need to buy something to put it in. I suppose if you offered a service (cleaning, consulting, etc) you may be able to get away with it. |

You make a big proposal with your plans for your business such as expected first year earnings, and an expected cost to start up your business, and you take that straight to a bank and apply for a business loan. |

Become a citizen of another country, then come back to the States. The government will help you start your business. |

You can get government grants or loans. You can also get your friends and family to invest in the company.
Depending on what your business is, you might want to look into getting an angel investor (look it up online).
You can also look at the small business administration's 7(a) guaranteed business loan program. They support small businesses with guaranteed long term loans. They support start-up and high potential ventures.
It might be hard right now to start up a business though because of the stock markets and loans being harder to get. |

Get a loan if you believe that your credit score is good. Or, You can try becoming a tutor since it only requires your head and gut as initial capital. After you have collected enough, you can open your own business (or maybe a tutoring place). |

If you're an expert within an industry, it's possible to start a business with no up-front investment, just through word of mouth. Unfortunately, not many people are in a position to do that.
It is possible to start a small business on a shoestring budget by doing all your own marketing and promotion (do your own brochures on your printer, deliver them yourself). Be prepared to work long hours and it may take months for the business to take off. During that time, you have to have some means of support.
Many communities have small business resources and mentoring programs. Do a Google search using those keywords for your area.
In post-script, to those people who recommended borrowing money... Don't. Start small, build your business in steps rather than sinking a lot of someone else's money into a venture. People want to be paid back, or worse, they want to be your boss. The whole point of starting your own business is being your own boss. |
