Outside your building is a cable box connection point. All they do is open that box, disconnect your main line and then close and reseal their box and leave, and there you have it.

The other end of the cable that is attached to your tv is also connected to a cable box or street pole outside your building. They will either come and manually disconnect or shut off the signal from their head office. But you can get an antenna and put it in the cable slot in the back of your tv and get a few free channels. But this can't be good for your credit.

They can automatically update your digital boxes to stop digital services, however a service person will sill have to show up and disconnect your cable. They do this by adding whats called a trap to the line, stopping your analog signal. (A trap is used so that the wire doesn't have to be left dangling in the air). This all happens outside your complex or if its big enough in their cable room.
