Corydoras_Catfishy | Help! How do I do this without making anyone upset????? |
I have a business and there are 6 people in it, not including me. The problem is, half of the people AREN'T DOING THEIR JOBS! I've warned them about this, but they continue being lazy. I don't think I should even pay them! Seriously, me and 2 other people are doing ALL OF THE WORK!!! How should I tell them that I am not going to pay them, without having them murder me in the process??? Because one of them would scream and slap me until my head would fall off, and the other would have a hissy-fit! And then the others would just probably quit on me!!! How should I do this?!?!?!?! |

Just say..I'm paying you to do your job.
I dont want to fire you, but this is your last warning.
you should fire them if they keep being lazy.
or just dont pay them. |

Put them on commission and pay them according to their production. That way they have to work to get paid. |

Look for some new help and as soon as position is filled, fire the lazy ones. Make sure you document the warnings so you don't have to pay unemployment . I think you still have to pay them for the time they put in so far. |

When you are running your own business you have to be tough with your employees. I think you have to pay them or they can sue you but perhaps you can counsel them individually. If they don't straighten up you need to fire them before the 2 good employees you have get fed up and quit. There are plenty of people who need work and are willing to pull their weight and earn the money you will pay them. People who show up to work and do nothing deserve to be let go. |

Well depending on what state your in you probably have to pay them. But you should not put up with employees behaving in this manner. Anyone can be replaced and unfortunately that's the name of the game. If they are unwilling to do their jobs there is always someone else who will. |

just fire them, why pay someone to do work your doing?
its important to keep your relationships with your employees strictly on a professional level. otherwise this situation becomes even more complicated when your worried about hurting ppl's feelings. you have a business to run, that should be your first priority, not their feelings. you need to stand up for yourself and your business and the outcome of your life, and either hire ppl who are willing to work or cut your employees and do the job yourself. i hope that you'll never have to be in this situation again.
all the best. ;) |

Measurements and KPI's (Key performance Indicators) should be set for everyone in the company. For example how many sales are to be made, how visits, account calls etc. These should be built into the employment contracts so they can be measured and tracked against performance.
Even if the other people are partners everyone should have measures against them s everyone knows how the company is progressing.
If they are employees and you do not have measures then you will find it hard to fire them without a legal battle. If they are partners then you need to call a directors board meeting and lay it on the line.
I know it's hard but it sounds like they are taking you for a ride knowing that you will not confront them. If it is your company then you need to step up as the leader and take control before you run the company and yourself into the ground.
Good Luck. |

you cant do it without upsetting them, but they're upsetting you, and theyre not bothered. be tough. maybe fix up a competition or pay by performance. |

One thing to remember is that you cannot force people to do anything. You've already given them fair warning, so you're within your rights to take necessary steps. You don't say if you're paying these employees under the table, or paying payroll taxes (FICA, Social Security, Workers Comp). If you're paying them above the table, you can just fire them, but make sure that your hard-working employees can vouch for the slacker situation, because the fired employees can go file for unemployment and get it, if your state unemployment office determines you didn't have sufficient cause to fire them. The way you describe the situation, the slackers don't have a leg to stand on. If you're paying them under the table (no taxes taken from their paychecks), go ahead, fire them anyway. You're not going to be any worse off, because either way only three people are doing the work of six, and you can always hire better employees. If you are seriously worried about being harmed, then fire them by email (which normally is a somewhat unethical method). Lock up your office, call the police, and ask for advice on how to handle any possible vandalizing and/or tagging of the premises. You can get a restraining order against them, which starts the documentation process, if you need to bring them to court in the future. You 've already put them on notice that you're not pleased with their output, so you're entitled to get rid of them. |
