Help! The best website host for at home businesses?
I am in the process of starting my home based business and am overwhelmed with how to start a website, and who I should choose to host it - - Yahoo Small Business solutions, Microsoft, Go Daddy, etc . . . I am on a tight budget, but want it to look professional. I'd also like to have a check out option, where customers can purchase online.
Does anyone have any personal experience with any of the website hosts, or advice?
Thanks!

Paid web hosting is the way you want to go if you are going to want search engines to recognize you as legitimate, and/or you are wanting to make some money with your site. There are a ton of paid web hosts out there, and my husband and I exhausted ourselves researching them before making a decision to go with HostExcellence for this site and another one we run. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that we were getting tired and we liked HostExcellence's plans for mulitple domains and the fact that they had a site builder with tons of customizable templates (many of them do, but some of the good ones on the review lists don't). We also liked the amount of storage and bandwidth we were given, among other things. I haven't had a complaint yet, and we've been customers since October 2005. They have excellent 24/7 live chat support that helps me all the time with just about any issue you can imagine. Whenever a service has been down (which has only been a few times), it's either back up before I have a chance to ask about it or it's resolved before I get off live chat with them. They have a ton of tools at your service, and a site builder program with templates that I've found pretty easy to use. We have more e-mails available than we'll ever use, and more bandwidth and storage space than we've come close to dipping into.
My sahms n wahms site has a page with some great links for free helpful information on starting your own website as well. Good luck!

Yes,

You can sign up for a budget host like http://midnightpublishinggroup.com they do not have a direct signup link, you have to call them to set it up. They also do programming. The hosting fee I pay is only $4.95 /mo and their support staff is usually online to help.

The best way to setup a 'shopping' system online thing is through paypal or another 3rd party billing system. If you want more details just send me an IM on yahoo - my username is halcyon2600.

Use paypal (credit card) for payment. Make sure that you can sent (mass) email's out. Also check if php, perl etc is allowed.
If you need shopping cart look at for a hoster that has this installed. (like OsCommerce).

To let it look professional is all up to you. (Tip: Don't use flash and keep it simple and clean)

Matt from MyMonkeywrench.com
MyMonkeywrench.com does not have store-front "stuff," but offers services to enhance your site, or build one there. It is all fast, easy, free. They are always adding services based on their registered users recommendations.

It may meet all your needs, but would be a great enhancement to whatever you decide.

If you are serious about websites either for personal or your business, don't go to free web hosting as they are usually not reliable and you may end up losing all your hard work. Free web hosts usually put advertisements on your websites and it could be annoying.

Greetings,
wow, what a long answers you got.
Should you want hosting for your business I can provide you with it for free.
Should you want a website - I can build it for you for $200.

If not thats fine, just let me say that most of the people that answer questions like yours are doing it out of their own interest, so this is probably not a good place to ask.

Consider seeking professionals.
Here is a good place to start (I am clearly not affiliated with them as the website is well known):
http://drupal.org/paid-services

Best of luck!

me and my mom are currently starting a website, we are going through storesonlinepro.com. they provide everything, checkout, customer service, tools to do research on what to sell, etc. i dont know about anyother website host. you also get to design your site by yourself, so you can decide what colors, what layout, etc. but you should check this out and see if its right for you.

hope this helps.

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage.

Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in the "domain name," you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber., a homepage URL which will be masked by the domain name. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE.

Here's a demonstration: Type in the URL window: "www.pizzanextdoor.com" which will bring up their pizza website. Take note of the domain name. Then type in the URL window: "http://home.pacbell.net/vten/1a/pizzame... and you will see that this is the original homepage which is unmasked without the domain name.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is to first set up a website and publish its domain name on major search directories such as Google.com, Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these search directories to provide them with goods and services. In a sense, these search directories are a very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using such "generic" queries will not be able to discover your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website, in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which, when observed and committed in designing of a website with placement of various critical metatags that can surely achieve a high search engine presence and increase Internet traffic to your website. These metatag strategies work well with published webpages at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based website, make sure to fill-in the property entries such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the Internet audience and their incoming setup. For example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages take too long to load up and therefore analog users will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users for maximum marketability, then select analog users since 80% of most resident users are still analog Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text, is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which should consist of no more than 65 characters separated by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which is defined as the loading, and submission of repetitive words into a particular metatag category. "Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported to Google's spamreport.com can result in the elimination of your website from their search directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on Yahoo.com: Begin with the search query "pizza downtown los angeles." It will bring up some 1.4 million+ websites as results. Check out where "Pizza Next Door" is ranked. It's in the Top Five! Again, Pizza Next Door's high web presence was achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant metatags according to Yahoo's publication guidelines.

Good luck!

I use Host4Profit because they allow you to refer others and end up having your hosting paid for. I actually make money for using them as my hosting company instead of paying them to host my website.

I'll put my website below so you can see how professional it is, and if you like it you can sign up for Host4Profit through the website.

Thanks,
Alicia
