Look around to see if there are any courses running at your job centre/local library about starting a business. Many of these are free. Not only will you get valuable advice on making yourself known, but you will be in a room with up to 20 budding entrepreneurs, who will all need a bookkeeper if their businesses do well. I am a bookkeeper myself (started in April) and most of the responses I have had so far have come from people I met on a Business Link course in February/March this year.

You should be able to take your kid with you if you need to - most places are very accomodating. And, if you'll forgive the calculating manner, it is easier to start a conversation over something neutral - such as your little one. Once you have people chatting, it is much easier to introduce the theme of your businesses.

Talk to people - it's not what you know OR who you know - it's who knows you! (I learned that on my business course!)

And don't go in telling yourself that you're shy. Don't tell anyone - bluff it. I am also very shy, but I've got so good at hidding it that no-one would guess.

There is loads of work for bookkeepers at the moment - every other person seems to be starting up their own business. But as well as small businesses have you thought of approaching larger firms who may want to contract out their bookkeeping? Also accounting firms who may wish to take on free-lance help during their busy seasons. I am investigating this very area at the moment for my own business.

Wishing you every success!

How about a website. It doesn't have to be anything more than a page. Contact details. Brief synopsis of what you offer and your work experience. Maybe a testimonial or two from satified clients. Perhaps a mugshot of you to create some visual interest.. Get some business cards printed. Again doesn't have to be fancy. Carry some with you always and whenever you meet someone who might benefit from your services offer one to them. Ads on commuity boards especially libraries. Budding entrepreneurs usually spend quite a bit of time there researching. I've no idea what AAT is I presume an accountancy body. If you get a website up you can then put a two line ad in local papers referring to it. Always have phone number as well not everyone has access to internet. Lastly drink wine loosen up. If you are confident in your abilities let it show when you talk to potential clients.
Hope that's been of some help.

Hey! I really, really, really strongly advise AGAINST the yellow pages. Who actually goes to the yellow pages anymore to look for such things?- they go to the Internet. And the best way to go to the Internet is through SBI.

SBI is more than just a 'hosting service'. And its far cheaper than paying a webmaster to make you a site, with no traffic. Nope, SBI provides all the tools so that a complete newbie to the Internet can start up their local business from the comfort of their home. This would be perfect for you, since you could watch your child at home too!

Keep a forward dairy of those clients you have just missed and get into the habit of giving them a courtesy call every 3 months.

If they don't want you to do that cross them off your prospects list and focus on those that are happy to build a rapport with them.

Give a few of your business cards to your existing clients for referrals. If you have done a good job for your client they will be happy to recommend you.

There are lots of ways you can get more clients.

1) Advertising (as has been mentioned) but you will have lots of competition,
2) Get to know local bank managers, after all, most small businesses get to know their bank managers who may be able to recommend you( although this is changing as the banks consolidate into regions)
3) Get to know your local liquidators. This may seem wierd, but most businesses that go under do start up again and often need help.
4) Get to know local medium sized firms of accountants. They may not want to deal with the book-keeping side of a clients affairs. This could also help themselves as you may get work that you are not allowed to deal with which you can pass back.
5) Go to local breakfast clubs. lots of small businesses in an area get together to help each other out.
6) Buy lists of prospects from say Glenigans. This can be costly with a low strike rate.

The list is almost endless.

Most work will come via recommendation. To be successful, you will need to do a good job and develop relationships.

Get your own website?
Advert in local rag?

Think bigger.........

You need to advertise! How the hell will people know if you are out there if you don't?

Get in the Yellow Pages, make sure you've got a website. Promote yourself, noone else will!

start doing a bit of creative accounting - you will have lots of clients then and you will know the loopholes to cover yourself. Like making people look good for mortgages etc.

Create a nice one page leaflet, which describes your business and services, together with your contact details - and bring it to businesses in your area, and deliver it to homes as well - you never know who else is running a small business from home and could use your services!

jester
People buy from people. Use your existing clients to promote your business, you have a ready made sales force in them. Because they are existing clients they must believe in you, they know how good you are and are best placed to recommend you.

Cultivate a referral culture, where your present clients are encouraged to 'reveal the secret, which is you' to their family, friends and colleagues. Reward referrals and offer discounts (add on then take-away).

You will not beat good word of mouth, it's the oldest form of viral marketing, and still works best. If you can deal with your present clients you should be able to deal with their friends and family.

You still have to do all your normal advertising and marketing (though try to be as original as you can) and you have to be available to take the calls when they come in; but referrals should at least help.

You could sell your services on Ebay.

There are thousands of ebayers who are totally clueless when it comes to accounts.

I've heard that if you are planning to run your own business it is best to be in sales for a year or two. You have to get rid of the being shy part. Go to seminars or conferences whenever you can and interact as much as possible.
