Help me retire ... please ...?
I was a Boy Scout ... Troop 174 out of Brooklyn NY.
I was a Marine in VMFA 115 and 451 between 1975 and 1981.
I forstalled career to free Nelson Mandela.
I have spent most of my life helping others.
I have an AAS in Data Processing and an AST in Visual Communications.
I want to know how to start a business and retire.
I am 50.
Can you advise me?
Perhaps something which you have used and you know can work.
I want to be a freelance Graphic Designer and am leaning toward a business in this field.
But starting a business seems full of road blocks I cannot predict.
How do I separate truth from myth and save time?

You should be proud of yourself. You have accomplished a great deal and you have done well for others as well as yourself. Here is some information you can add to your growing list of options. I hope this helps.

I have 2 types of friends.

!) Friends who get hired and fired
2) Friends that are retired before the age of 55..

All of my friends who are retired are age 53 and younger and work as Independent Associates with Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. http://www.GetTheExperts.com

We are a 34 year old New York Stock Exchange company on a mission to make Equal Justice Under Law a reality for everyone. We are always looking for new Associates all over the US and Canada who want what you want.

I'd love to help you. Ive helped a lot of people start a business with my company.

I would suggest one thing. Start an online business in your passion area. In this way, you could enjoy doing it and at the same time, earn some incomes.

If you are interested in graphic design, you could easily create an e-book with all the necessary details and contents. Setup a system to automate the process of marketing it, and payment.

Find out from the link below. I have happened to come across it. It share with you how to jump start an online business in your passion area.

Hope that it will be useful to you.

Hi Bleuthai,

You have a lot of good, varied experience and bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to contribute to the business marketplace!

Have you considered a legitimate company in the field of Direct Sales, or Network Marketing?

You can find many legitimate compaies by doing a simple search for "home business resources" through http://yahoo.com Look for communities that have article's, directories of legitimate companies, etc.

Determine what YOUR criteria is in a home based business, what's most important to you in each of the following categories?

The product
The training, coaching and support
The compensation
The start up cost
The monthly commitment, quotas, restrictions, etc
The market for the product the company offers

Research the company through the DSA (Direct Sellers Association) and the Better Business Bureau to see what kind of standing they have.

In 1998 I was in a position where I was searching for the ability to retire in 10-15 years with FINANCIAL SECURITY. I also wanted to enjoy my life NOW, along the journey. My skills were 17 years as a convention and event planner.

Through a legitimate Direct Sales/Network Marketing Company was able to take almost 1 1/2 years off after working my business consistently for the first 1 1/2 years.

Although I no longer have to work another day, if I choose, I love the work I do, and spend a few hours a day, a few days a week, doing what I love, training, coaching and mentoring other people.

As they say "If you find what you love, you'll never 'work' another day in your life!"

After the first couple of years, which were a valuable learning experience, I discovered that the product must be fun, unique, and have a market where the customers will want to buy it continuously (consumable, repeat orders) and the customers love the product so much that they will actually refer new customers to you (without your asking!)

This will enable you to have a solid, GROWING business.

Find an honest coach and mentor that is available to train, coach and support you, that's available to answer your questions.

Good luck to you!

Stephanie Sterling

I took a course to try to open my own business. 95% of them fail. I don't want to be a downer, so make sure it's something you like to do. I think the graphic design thing could work, since it's not a restaurant or other risky business. Good luck.

Franchise, or become a vendor for other companies.
Check out a site called AWAI (for tech writers). Now, their teaching is based on writing, not graphic design, but their marketing techniques are sound.
If nothing else, it might help you understand system processes.

Wow - you are bold! At 50 starting a new career/business of your own. Where do you get the courage - not a valid question since I see all you have done in your question.
Anyway, I was pointed in the direction of the following web page http://www.helpbizowners.com/index.html. I've not used them because I chickened on opening my business - I don't have the expertise to do mine yet-I'm also 50.
I wish that you could try this service and let me know how it goes but I know that yahoo answers is not set up for that interchange,.
I hope it works out for you.....

What is it that you really want? Looks to me like you are far from retiring. You want to be a businessman and you want to be an artist. The two may not be entirely compatible. Businessmen make hard impersonal decisions while artists follow their muse. You want to start a business and eventually retire (like, when you're 60 or 65). Looks to me that what you want is to put up a business that you will have run by employees, so that you will earn passive income and spend most of your time enjoying the things you like doing, and then have the business income pay for the bills. Robert Kiyosaki has a lot to say about this.
If you insist on being both businessman and artist, why don't you create a showcase of your best graphic designs and post it on the web, and then sell yourself. You surely can get some business off the web, if you follow carefully the rules of the game.
My friend's 18 year-old daughter put up her drawings on the web, got a Paypal account, and now has a modest business ongoing. People pay for her designs off-the-rack, or commission her to do custom work.

if you start a business now you won't be able to really retire. Businesses take a lot of work and small business owners generally work way longer hours than you would think, their work never really stops.

Jeff
My suggestion, and I haven't read all the other answers, would be to seek out someone to be a mentor. Work with them, under them as an apprentice. Spend your off time hanging out and learning. A great way to prepare for that is to be employed in the field (let someone else take the risks for a while) and then learn all you can...before you jump ship. Do you have graphic designers that are friends of yours? Is there a design college close by? Find someone to latch on to and go ahead in that field.

OH MY GOD!
I noticed that everyone from Amway guys to Zamway guys have given you their websites and toll free numbers. Starting at age 50! Wow what a beautiful age to start. What with all that experience behind you!! I wish you were my brother and/or son I could give to millions of ideas.

Rules:

A)
Don't get hung up with graphic design only. You want something that will build you pension and also pay for you to live now. If there is no demand for your services than why waste time on it?
B)
If you see a popular product, why not see how they market it and see how you can arrange to buy from them wholesale and resell it using their existing delivery services. (Example I am selling product now from Toronto Canada to Just companies in Ontario because other parts of Canada are not within my reach for delivery. Now you could have come to me for say Quebec or Alberta or British Colombia?

the possibilities are ample!! Just you look around!

i am not soliciting business so I will not give out my contacts. You sure have potential. Good Luck!!

You’re probably familiar with the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. With a few magic beans, Jack was able to climb higher than he ever imagined. The beans we use aren’t magic, yet the affect they have on people is quite magical. Just ask anyone who’s enjoying a great cup of coffee how they feel. You’ll probably find that they’re on top of the world.

If you’re looking for a golden business opportunity, like Jack, this one can also take you higher than you’ve ever imagined. No magic beanstalk here though. Just the old fashion hard work and climb the ladder to success. And if you are ambitious, we’ll share with you over 26 years of experience and success how to reach the top of the office coffee service industry as a owner of your own Office Coffee Service (OCS) business.
