Home-based businesses????
How does one start a home-based business? What are some of the benefits and drawbacks of working from home?

The best way to start a home-based business is to check into, ready, multi-level marketing companies. I know, a joke, right? Wrong, if you find the right one that offers products and services that people are already using habitually, such as cell phone services (cingular, t-mobile), Dish, and MANY more, than it is much easier than one would think. For more details go to www.fhtm.net. E-mail me if you have any in-depth questions at shandi0707@yahoo.com. I am NOT trying to sell you into anything, just like to help people. No matter what you do, good luck on your journey in life!

There are thousands of outfits that will "help" you start a "home based" business. Technically, any business which can be run out of one room of your house is "home based." Don't kid yourself - running a business, any business, is a lot harder than it looks. The real question is, what can you do, different from most other people, to provide a value to others so that they will pay you for it, and pay you a lot more than it costs you to create that value.

The cheapest business to set up is the hardest to make work - any kind of sales. Sales is purely a matter of percentages - the more people you make contact with, the more you sell. You cannot make a living a selling anything only to people you already know, and you cannot make a sale unless you are personable and upbeat no matter what. A successful sales person is clever enough to see the value, clever enough to persuade others of that value, sensitive enough to know when to talk and when to listen, and insensitive enough to keep it up despite the fact that eighty to ninety percent of the people you pitch to will ultimately say no. There is high turnover in sales because the vast majority of people do not have a personality that can succeed in it.

The easiest kind of business to get into is the hardest to make money at - for a few hundred bucks, some outfit will create a referral web site for you, which will show up on people's search engines and bear links to other sites which pay pennies for each sale that comes to them from another site. As referral sites proliferate, they divide the same pool of shoppers among more and more intermediaries, and each makes less and less from it. The real money is made by the outfit that sets up the referral sites for a fee.

Beyond that, there are dozens of ways to make money from home, all of which require you to work at least a 40 hour week at them in order to make a living. There is real work for employment recruiters who need only an e-mail address and a telephone, for travel agents doing the same, for intermediate workers in multi-level marketing of products, etc. None of these is a get-rich-quick-without-effort option.

In any case, you should incorporate so that if you screw up you cannot lose everything in a lawsuit, and you should get a license so you can operate legally in your local jurisdiction.

The benefits of working at home are savings in transportation, wardrobe, meals out, plus business expense deductions for dedicated phones and dedicated equipment, and the ability to deduct the cost of the fraction of your house used for business from business proceeds before taxes - taxable income is zero until all expenses have been met. Disadvantages include the loss of privacy, the difficulty of separating work time from family time, and the perception by others that, because you are at home, you are "not really working", so they can bother you. Work at home means work, sequestered from family, away from TV, away from the family phone, ignoring family business and issues during working hours.

That sort of depends on what type of home based business you are interested in starting. I am a consultant with Scentsy, which is a candle company that makes wickless candles and candle warmers, along with room sprays and car fresheners. With this type of "consultant" based business it is very easy to get started. You simply purchase your starter kit $99.00 and open a seperate account specificaly for your business finances. Scentsy is a home party type of business where I go to people's homes and demo the product and they place their order directly through me... then I get a comission on whatever I sell. It is very simple and one of the easier companies to sell for. Your earning potential is entirely up to you, you can work as little or as much as you wish to. Plus your home will always smell wonderful!!! Contact me if you are interested in joining, I can help you get started.

First of all, check with your city hall and see what kind of restrictions they have for the area you live in and the type of business you are allowed. Get a license at the city hall when oked.
I used to have a home-based business and I loved it, but I did miss the contact with other adults, co-workers or customers, even though sometimes I would get phone calls.
You have to be very disciplined, if you are the laid back type of person, this is not a good idea. Now if you are like me that feels guilty when I'm not working, than it is OK (you'll have to work on that one too, to not overdo it).
Now I have another business with employees and walk in customers, and I love it even more.

Well it depends on what type of business you are looking to do. I have been a Home Interiors consultant for over 2 1/2 years..and have won trips and made alot..alot..alot of money and the best benefits for me is to stay home with my kids while my husband works outside the home. No daycare, make your own hours and be your own boss.
