Flyers every were. Ask salons, nail shops if you can post a flyer in their window.
Get post cards and print out an introductory special and ask retailers if they would place them on the counter for their customers. Offer the retailer something in return for their kindness. Something of your product. They will become a testimony for you, too.
Step out of your comfort zone & challange yourself.
Remember, they are just people, too. Talk to them like you would a friend. Approach people with sincerity and don't try to SELL them. They'll just go a runnin'. Just like you would if someonw was trying to sell you.
Just be yourself & have "conversations". Pactice and you'll get better with it.

Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google
A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:
1) Create a blog pertaining to your field
2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!
3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.
Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

It's called 'advertising.' You'll want to vary your advertising depending on the type of business. Direct mail, newspaper ads, fliers... those types of things work pretty well if it's really a service you're selling. Classified ads are much cheaper and are somewhat effective for most things.
Hopefully your small business isn't Amway or Partylight or something like that. Those are really hard to advertise because they really depend on you going out and pulling people in. I don't think classified ads are going to help there.
