How can I get interns for work at my non-profit?
We're interested in starting a rolling internship program at a mid-size non-profit. How do we get the ball rolling? Where can we recruit interns? Do you have to work with local colleges in particular? Are there any law or stipulations that we should be aware of? Any information would help. Thank you in advance.

I think you answered your own question: get in touch with as many local colleges and universities as you can. They should be able to help you out with laws and regulations about labor as well as put you in touch with available students. Without the schools' support, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find willing interns.

If you're on friendly terms with any other non-profits in your area, you should be able to get some tips and advice from someone who's already been through the process. If you're not on friendly terms with other local non-profits, here's your chance!

Finally, you might want to see about making the rounds at local high schools. You can raise awareness for your cause and organization, but you might also get some interest from students who support your cause or just need some padding for their college resumes. Stress that fact in any materials or presentations you can make, and even if you only get one kid per high school you're still gaining (free!) labor.

I believe the laws would depend on your state. I know in PA you cannot have an upaid intern do the position of someone you would normally pay.

Most of the time you work with local colleges and go to their career fairs to recruit interns.

Andrew
Contact local colleges that train for those programs and arrange it with them to send the interns for placement and grades to work for you for free

you need to be sure that your college interns learn real-world skills and that you are willing to be a reference for them. If you get High school students doing their sevice hours, then give them a good reference as well (if they deserve it).

Also as one person said - make sure that they do not work in any position that you would normally pay for. They CANNOT be taking a job away from anyone.

When I first immigrated to Canada, I had no "canadian experience" that the employers wanted so I volunteered for two non-profits and got some great work experience, and good reference letters. This allowed me to eventually get a paying job.

-Contact local colleges: many will advertise your internships in their database

-Check out jobs.com and post advertisements

When it comes to internships the big question is -what's in it for them?

I know one guy in the entertainment industry and he get dozens of people asking to be his intern every year (and he's not interested in having one). And I knew another guy back in New Jersey who's a real dirt bag with a "Christian ministry"; and he's always looking for interns that he uses as his personal servants (few last more than 3 months).

Many people are willing work hard for very little up front compensation, that is if it leads to a great job or is part of some noble cause (like being in the Peace Corp). If you have something to offer then the interns will come to you. If you have nothing to offer but hard work and pat on the back then don't expect too much to happen.

yes, you recruit interns at local colleges/community colleges. Some specific fields are sociology, psychology, etc. Some classes will give them credit for the internship, so you will want to discuss that with the various school departments.

Local colleges will be your best bet because depending on the field, they are required to intern for a certain number of hours unpaid before they're able to graduate. I interned as a Physical Therapy Tech at a small office and they didn't have to really go through much just fill out my time sheet for me. There was nothing that they did that was required by law. You can call the local college and as long as they have dealt with interning in the past, they should be able to give you all information needed. Otherwise, you can put an ad in the paper or craigslist, but if you need someone to work there for free, you may not get many results, unless service hours are needed for other schools.

so you want free workers ? then the positions must be educational. Otherwise they are subject to minimum wage laws.

Try speaking with the local high school. Many school have communtiy service requirments for either a class or graduation. It sound like your organization would be the perfect way for many of these students to meet this requirement. Even if it's not required, people my still be interested. It cant hurt to try, but you should definately spek with the administration before you try. Also, try to find local Boy Scout troops, or other local clubs looking for community service projects. Good Luck and Happy Holidays.
