It is very difficult indeed, the best thing to do is get your idea to market ASAP, that way you get the recognition as the brand/design owner, I would reccomend you license the design to a company who can afford to protect it, going it alone is very expensive and protecting yourself is indeed nearly impossible. You can try to threaten legal action to any infringing companies, sometimes they may offer to pay you off but not if they can afford to take you to court with good lawyers.
There are companies like ACID - anti copying in design who can be affective in assisting designers, there is an annual membership fee to pay but might be worth considering, they have a good reputation in this country.
