Develop a VIP customer cards for your loyal customers. Have student's eat 1/2 off on Wednesdays. Have a permanent senior citizens discount. Contact some of the local radio stations and explain your story, and I'm sure many will want to help spread the word about your take away. If there are nearby colleges, put flyers around the campus. Make flyers and have the inserted in college campus newspapers. Since your competitor is beating you in prices, you may have to shell out some money, and run an ad in your local newspaper once a month. Also, many newspapers give reviews of restaurants and see if you can contact your local newspaper's food critic to come order some food and write a review, or just highlight your business in the food section. |

People don't always buy on price considerations. Other things are sometimes more important to them. Customer service for one, get to know your customers, make the effort to be friendlier with them. Make all your staff aware that they have to be focused on the service. Your menu may also include things that are not offered by your direct competitor, but remember, never give up trying. |

Give added value, first the best quality as people will always pay a little more for service and quality. make sure every thing is as fresh as possible. Added value is:
A happy smiling face, fresh & clean appearance and premises, drink with sandwiches combine a special price.
Finaly stand outside your shop and have a good and honest look, would you want to shop there? If not sort it quickly. Image is vital. Good luck from a B D Consultant |

Flyers inserted into local newpapers? An ad in the food section of same?
As this is a new rival, perhaps people are just trying it for the novelty value. You need to make sure that you offer the best possible service and quality to beat your rival. Perhaps try offering a free drink with every meal or some other incentive. |

offers 2 for 1, spend over £10.00 get a free bottle of coke or something. Better service, better quality food/advertising. how about marketing find out what the public wants then see if you can get it. Shop around the wholesalers/markets/shops see if you can get a better deal on you food. do you buy in bulk? I presume you do as this is normally cheaper. How about getting other local companies to sponsor you business for free advertising on your leaflets shop windows on your takeaway cartons. Remember you have to spent some money to make money. One more thing if you sort out all the above out then you have hit the nail on the head. The other takeaway may be just a fad. Also try loyalty points how about food vouchers as gifts. Anyway there are few ideas here to get you started good luck. |

been there, had the same problem. keep your menu simple. does leaflet drops (these are a great way of bringing new business but can seem costly at the time). as some of the others have said, one or two special offers... but most of all, dont substitute quality! i always found people will go other places, but they always come back to the good food. the other thing to do is start a loyality scheme. |

Well, if you are to compete you're going to have to reduce the prices or at least start an offer for your customers...say spend £10 get something free. Advertise in local papers/magazines (see if any of your local mags do free ads). Offer free delivery for orders over a certain amount or a bottle of wine for orders over a certain amount.....things like that. Personally i have defected to different companies in the past as they were cheaper, but always ended up going back to the original one as the food was better. If you're paying cheaper prices, you're probably getting substandard goods so i'd just hang on to your hat and see what happens |

My parents owned a small restaurant, I couldn't stand working behind the scenes so one summer I went around the local area and talked to people and handed out small flyer's with our address etc. and a special or two.
If your restaurant has anything better/ different to offer than the other take-away EXPLOIT IT!
Try offering one special below cost to attract customers. As you probably know, customer loyalty can be the difference between success and failure.
Good Luck and happy eats! |
