No computer at home is somewhat limiting, but then again, you will be less tempted to spend money on all the scams out there preying on those that want to work from home.
The old standby - childcare, is still one of the best ways. Home daycare can be pretty lucrative depending on where you live. It's rare to find a city where daycare isn't between $100-250 a week per child. Take in 6 kids (the usual legal limit) and that's pretty good money. Add drop-in for nights and weekends and you make money when you sleep.
The most common legitimate ways to earn money from home are:
1. telemarketing or collections - you usually need a dedicated phone line, some will expect internet access and a computer. Check your local Craigslist (www.craigslist.org, then find your city on the right) and your local paper for these jobs.
2. ebay - selling stuff on ebay works well, just do your homework so you know how to price your stuff right, and when you've found something cheap enough to buy that is worth your time.
3. Journalism - I have made my living over the past 5 years writing articles, press releases and marketing communications materials, plus the occasional website design. Still, this is possible without a computer, but tough and you have to have the skills.
4. Bookkeeping and/or office support for small businesses. Marketing yourself, in other words, getting the word out that you do this kind of work is the hard part. Again, you will end up needing a computer, but a cheaper, used one (like $200) will do just fine. Most areas this kind of work is going to pay between $20-50 an hour.
With all of these, if you're making more than a "little bit" you will need to learn about tax accounting for the self-employed. YOu can write off part of your home and utilities in many cases (reducing your taxes) but must pay self-employment taxes (roughly 15%) on top of income taxes on your net earnings (that's where knowing writeoffs helps reduce your tax bill).
Good luck. |
