If you get it: Style TV has a great show called Peter Perfect, where he goes in and helps owners make their businesses over and improve them - it has some excellent ideas. There is also a netrwork of retired executives that, if available in your area, can sometimes help with free advice for the business aspects that are so important.
But really what it takes to get a restaurant started is good word-of-mouth advertising. If you have a nice, clean place, with good, consistent food; and if you give people value for their money you will be a success.

You have to get the word out that you have a great place to eat. To do that, you have to do some advertising. For example: 1) handbills distributed within a six block area offering a special (free appetizers with a meal purchase, buy one, get one free on Wednesdays, etc. 2) big sign in window offering the specials; 3) stand on the walk in front of the restaurant and offer samples of food to passersby; 4) have a person with a sandwich board listing your specials walk around the neighborhood; or 5) have a neighborhood grand opening where you serve a selection of finger foods and act like the ultimate host.
You may have to cut your profit short for a couple of months while you are doing the promotion to get people in; but, it will be worth it in the long run.
In my area (FL), they offer early bird specials - dinner between 4 and 6 pm are $3 to $5 cheaper than after 6pm. It brings out the crowd.

I GUESS THIS DEPENDS ALOT ON WHERE YOU HAVE RESTAURANT. IF IT IS A FAMILY TOWN-HAVE KIDS EAT HALF PRICE. ASK A FEW BUSINESSES IF YOU COULD LEAVE A MENU IN THE BREAK ROOM. HAND MENUS WITH YOUR NUMBER AND SAYING TO MAKE RESERVATIONS. MAKE UP PROFESSIONAL POSTER(ON INTERNET) AND HANG THEM UP AT LOCAL STORES, SHOPPING MALLS, ETC. HAVE SOME OF YOU FRIENDS OR LOCALS IN THE COMMUNTIY COME IN FOR A COMPLEMENTARY MEAL-WORD OF MOUTH IS THE BEST SPREAD BUSINESS. ETC. I AM SURE YOU ARE GETTING THE PICTURE BECAUSE I COULD GO ON FOREVER. |

You need to find some morning show radio guys (don't go to the #1 guys in town, they will be harder to convince) and GIVE them some free meals. Tell them to come by and SET THE TIME.
Then make sure they know your name and that you serve them personally. Not only do you let them order whatever they like, but recommend some things to them. Perhaps as an appetizer you make them a sample of your best stuff.
As soon as they finish the meal, ask them if they would like to come back with their spouses? Nothing gets radio people talking about a restaurant like being able to impress their wife. (Most radio guys have had to forsake their families while they move up the ladder...) When their wives are with them, befriend her with great desserts.
Whatever their wives like, they pretend to like on the radio...

we need more information like what type of restaurant, what area, ect, ect. The basics are good food and good service. First you gotta make sure the ones who ARE coming in will come back.
Hire 5 secret diners and pay them $50 to have a meal at your restaurant, plus of course a free meal. Interview them separately then as a group. Go to other restaurants and see how they do things differently. Then go buy a guerrilla marketing book and do the things the book tells you to do. This will get you started |

I don't know how much is your profit margin. You can do some of these people sugessted, giving free things, or try my radical idea, only if your profit margin allows this. For every customer or family that comes to your restaurant, if they bring another customer for you, you tell your current customer, that he gets free meal, in the amount of what his refered customer spent on their meal. To track it, is you hand out a coupon card with their specific ID kind of membership, and 10% discount, which he can give to his friend as a motivaton to go to your restaurant. Kind of viral marketing done on the internet, maybe you can do it for your restaurant, and who knows it will spread like crazy, since everybody like a free meal, and they will try to get as many friends as posibble to eat in your restaurant. If they keep on referring, well certain individuals might get a free meal for life, their reward for their marketing effort. Of course if the next time they come, and they spend less then their referred customer, you don't give them money on the difference. That's it, one free meal for every customer they refer. So that way they will try to match the price or order a little more.
If you want to take it further, you can even set up a website, so your customer, with specific ID can check how much their customer spent. Don't have to set up the website now, your customer can always check with their friend how much they spend.
Another method, is like what Starwood club is doing, The club creates a membership card, of course at a cost, which I bought for $250.00 last time. The idea the card is valid for one year, if only one person eats in the restaurant , there is only 5% discount. Two people 50% discount, three people 33% discopunt, 4 people 25% discount and so on. I don't know whether you can apply this to your restaurant. You can design the card for one year membership, then expires or after certain number of visits then expires.
The rest is like what the other people are saying advertis with flyers, newspaper, give a free gift if they spend certain amount of money, etc.
