Hi,
Most work from home type jobs require you to start your own business. All of them will require work and training. I think the key is to find a business that has a proven process that others have been successful using. That way you can duplicate it for your own home business. If you are selling a product or service, you want it to be one that is something everyone uses and will return to you to use it again. Example: Candle Type Company is fun, but not everyone has to have a candle so you may not get repeat business.

There are legitimate work at home jobs out there - BUT you have to really do some work on your own to find them as most of the work from home listings you find online are scams so you will need to weed out a lot of "opportunities" you come across.
You could start a home based business, the possibilities of what you could do here are endless and "Golden Heart" is correct, a lot of people do make money at home with affiliate marketing. It is a very legitimate way to make money after you build it up a bit, but like any business it does take some time to get off the ground.
If on the other hand, you would like to start off with working for someone else from home then you might find my blog useful. I have been working at home for the past 5 years now doing medical transcription, selling on ebay, and dabbling in affiliate marketing on the internet. Since a lot of people I meet express interest in working from home when they find out that I work from home it has kinda become a hobby for me to search for legitimate work at home jobs and also to come up with ideas people can use to start their own business - no matter how small - so that they too can work from home.

If you're looking for a work from home JOB (not a home based business), there are lots of companies who hire for call center type positions. And don't listen to the nay-sayers who say work from home and telecommuting jobs are all scams or that there aren't real jobs. There are. You just have to know where to look and how to avoid the scams.
Do NOT pay for a list of jobs or pay to get a job. There are a few of the legitimate companies that, after you have qualified for the job, ask you to pay for a background check if you will be handling sensitive information like credit cards. It's usually $20-$30 and from legitimate companies is a legit fee to pay. Other than that, there is no reason or need to pay anything if you just want a job. Some of the call center jobs, you are an independent contractor (IC) and some you are an employee.
If you want to start a home based business, there will be fees involved and business expenses. There are many legit business opportunities out there in direct sales, multi-level and network marketing. There are great companies to work with, but having a business isn't for everyone.

I'm a stay-at-home Mom, too. I have a 4 year old, 3 year old and three month old. Anyway, when I was expecting this last baby we needed a little more money and I signed on with the Pampered Chef. It was a great decision! Now, when my kids are napping or otherwise entertained, I have always have something constructive to do. About 80% of the work can be done at home and one evening every week or two I go to someone's house to do a cooking show.
Pampered Chef is a very family-friendly business. The training materials always encourage you to put family first and one of the "tips" is that for every time the baby wakes you up at night you can scratch one item off your to-do list. :0) It's also a well established company with an excellent reputation. After about 7 months with the company I feel very confident in recommending it to others.
It is very inexpensive to start up a Pampered Chef business - $155 for the kit - and many new consultants start making a profit immediately. I chose to do things a little differently and didn't start making a profit for a few months. My Dad taught me "you have to spend money to make money" so I chose to make some investments that would help build my customer base quickly. I also had my baby right after I started so I didn't work consistently during that time. Now that I'm really focusing on the business I am making some money and feel like I'm contributing to the financial well being of my family. My next step is to earn more than just commissions by building a team.
