My son wants to open a small business till Summer is over. He is 12 years old and is very bright. He wants to open his three cardbord shops in our yard...IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!! OK here is what your son has to do to earn BIG money (for a 12 year old) over this 3 month summer.
Tell him to think like a true businessman, tell him to get 3 people who want to make money over the summer, who are dedicated and aren't going to quit on him.
Now he sets up 3 businesses, one for each of them to run. (example; lemonade, candy, soda, redbull, carwash, etc) Each of these partners are going to get 25% profit from their particular business. so your SON will recieve 75% from each one of these cardboard shops, for not doing ANY work. ( 3 business X 75% profit) He will just have to babysit them like a manager would, and pay for the initial cost (which will be paid off before profits are shared anyways).
If your son can pull this off at the age of 12, he is a true businessman, and will be very successful when he gets older. This task will not only encourage him to use him business mind, but it will make him a lot of money. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED |

Let him try it and learn himself why it doesn't work. If you don't let him try it he will never understand for himself why it won't work. If he's really good people will drive there on purpose to buy the stuff. He doesn't need to make a profit at 12. You are supporting it. He needs lessons. Don't stand in his way of learning how the real world works. the profit is in what he learns for himself. |

If you just want to make him feel better about his idea to make money, you could invite your friends over to buy something. He could use one shop and rent the other two, to his clueless friends. |

Don't discourage him. Don't fix it for him. ALLOW him to open the cardboard shops in your yard. He can only learn from doing - what works, what doesn't work. Encourage him, ask him open ended questions so he thinks. But don't every tell him he can't or won't succeed because you're in the middle of nowhere. |

Ebay. You would have to help him since he is only 12. He could sell some of his toys he no longer plays with. This would also help with house cleaning. lol

Let him do whatever he thinks is a good idea (within reason and the law of course).
He will quickly learn that he needs a few customers.
So if he is smart like you said, he should try to come up with a way to attract more customers.
Hopefully he will discover advertisement (poster, phone call, ad, word of mouth, etc....).

I suggest allow him to open the shop, and possibly put an add in the local newspaper about it. Maybe then he will attract more customers to it. I'm not sure. However, I know that when I was younger and lived basically in the middle of nowhere too, I would usually do work around the house and my mother would give me money for doing it since she worked all the time.
Maybe there are summer programs that he could go into?? I know that cutting grass for people in your neighborhood is another good idea that he could do for the summer to make quite a bit of cash. ;) |
