First of all, make up your mind. Have a definite plan on what your goal is. Is it computer-related, such as web-design, pc hardware & software repair? Is it an online business? or Is it both?
Second step, what are resources needed to achieve this goal? You need three basic resources:
1. Money
2. Time
3. Skills
Let us discuss each one. To finance your own business, you have to know your cash flow. What are the expenses related to a computer repair shop? Will you rent a space? Will you hire an assistant. Total these first, and see if you can afford such price.
Try to canvas the prices of these items. It is definite that you have a proper estimate. Try to look at newspapers, online, want ads and through other people who are in the same line of business.
Afterwhich, try to estimate your cash flow? Is it enough? Are you planning to borrow from the bank? Try to invest using your own money and some from the bank. I don't want to go technical with you, but the idea here is to balance your liquidity and debt ratio. In short, is your business merely relying on debt or investment?
There are several ways to earn extra money. Try being a free-lance pc technician; buy stock investments; or sell items that you don't need or want on ebay.
Let's go to the second item. Time. How many hours are you planning to invest in this business? Is it a full-time job? It is important that you allow yourself to be ready for the demands of such business. Like you said, your current job is stressful, so if you are planning to have a business and have a part-time job, you might want to consider your options.
Another element of time is consider your target date. When do you want to start? Is it possible?
Lastly, skills. Improve your skills. While you have a job right now, try to attend seminars relating to business, and web-design. Invest in short-term courses for programming or if you want you could buy a book and learn it from your own.
I think you have to be fast in making decisions. Every month or so there are new programs that are developed. You have to constantly improve your skills and be more adept to new products.
If your three resources are already sufficient, go ahead. Do it.
Don't just imagine it, take little steps everyday.

I work in a hospital too but in maintenance and have been finding it stressful for a long time and been trying my hand at an online business. I struggled for a few years wasted time and money before I found something that does work.
Now, there are so many ways, ideas, online businesses and products to sell on the internet. Finding which is right for you can be overwhelming and frustrating at times but all it takes is research and a good place to start.
Now, if your looking to start on ebay I suggest that you sign up and make some purchases first just to see how it all works, start off slow and make small purchases and build your feedback rating. Check out ebay community and ask for help. Once you get the hang of ebay, paypal, ebay stores, feedback rating and how auctions work then you'll understand more on how to sell on ebay.
If your looking for products to sell on ebay, WORLD WIDE BRANDS is a good place to start. Upon research you'll find that they are the only true wholesale directory on the internet PERIOD. I've tried so many of these so called wholesalers and dropshippers but found later it wasn't so. WorldWide Brands has a lot of info. and video on how to start your own business, so check it out.

I suggest you start your own home based business. The income opportunity is incredible in home based business. If you don't have experience in running a buisiness I find that home based businesses are the best way to go. Get involved in a business that has a program where you can learn a particular industry trade, you'll also learn how to run your business efficiently, while at the same time your building your business. You need to find an industry that you'd enjoy having a business in. Most home based business cost under $500. Some cost more depending on what it is you want to do. These types of businesses cost way less then the traditional ones.
Having experience in both, I found that a home based business is much more enjoyable. I got rid of my traditional business because of all the headaches involved. You can make the same amount of money as a traditional business, but without the added over head expenses. In my home based business I actually make more then I did in my traditional business. A lot of companies provide the back office type of work for you. Things such as billing, payroll, workman's comp accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, customer service, order entries, web sites etc etc. Not bad for under $500 huh? This lifts a major headache off your shoulders and allows you more free time. Also with home based businesses, just about everything you use in your home like utilities etc. become tax write offs.
I don't know what you like to do, so I will tell you what my husband and I started over six years ago and point you out to some others to take a look at for more ideas. Ours well supports our family of six. We have four children ages 10, 6, 3 and 1. Any home based business can well support your family as long as you put the time and effort, which is far less then a traditional business. What we do, is also becoming a major funding source for non-profit organizations to fund their programs.
We partnered up with a company in the telecommunications industry with a world wide company that's over 15 years old. We've been featured in several magazines Inc 500 rated us the 22nd fastest growing company. They offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway, but now they can have a lower cost. Services such as local and long distance phones, Internet, digital phones, video phones (you can see the person your taking to live)VOIP, Satellite TV, and all the major cellular phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltell, Nextell etc. have partnered up with them too.
How many people do you know, or know of, that uses one or more of these services? How would you feel if you could save people money on services that they're already using? Every time they pay their bills each month, you make a percentage every single month. Huge income opportunity. It's incredible how much money is involved in this industry.

I wouldn't recommend going back into the computer IT industry unless it is consulting. The "dirty" hands on work is no fun. If you're not a good programmer, then I wouldn't recommend going into web development since everything is now virtually Web 2.0 with ASP, JSP, PHP, ColdFusion and SQL backends. You'd also have to learn concepts of design and graphic design as well. Getting into web development is a HUGE undertaking if you want to be good and successful. If you do want to get back into working in the IT sector, Network Security is big right now until it gets absorbed as a Systems Admin job in the future. As for eBay companies, I'm not too sure but I'd have to be something that would sell in high quantities such as cell phones since eBay is charging a lot of fees lately.
Here are some other ideas. Since you're a nurse, have you ever thought of the idea of being a nurse practioner? They make a fair amount of money. If you want to go back into the IT sector, get certified - that is you way into the door with alot of employeers. Or go back to school and get a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Lastly, if you enjoy business and want to start your own company, consider taking some business, financing and marketing classes. There are alot of good business start-up ideas out there on the net and at your local bookstore. Best of luck! |
