I agree with Sir Richard - however seeking venture capital my be a bit lofty - depends how big the piggery is planned to be!
Has your friend any experience running piggeries?
This is probably crucial before any answer that has any real weight.
Because this will determine how his business plan will be structured. Assuming he does have a really good feasible plan, then there should not be a problem arranging finance.
Perhaps he ought to have one proffesionaly drawn up - so that he has a good chance of securing finance. |

He should start by asking friends & relatives ... if none are willing to invest, perhaps he should look again at the feasibility ..
If he is still determined to go ahead (and determination is vital to the success of any new business) he could look at re- mortgaging to raise finance .... or perhaps find some-one who is willing to go in as a Partner ..
After that it's 'Business Angels', 'Venture Finance' and Bank loans .. none are very attractive - the Banks being the worse, since he could end up working 'all hours god sends' just to meet the payments on whatever loan he ends up with (remember - if you have a Bank loan at 8%, a competitor with no loans can under cut you by 5% and still be 3% better off than you are) ... |

Hello,
Great post. The most important part of business is advertising. This makes or breaks a business. Some of the best ways to advertise I've found are:
1. Offline promoting (business cards, flyers, newspaper and other print advertising).
2. Online promoting (buying banner ads, forum posts, email auto replies).
The best method that's worked for me so far is handing out business cards. I don't do this in the usual way.... I buy them in bulk from a place online (they give the cards for free, I just paid shipping and handling...they also give a really nice free business card holder, it looks impressive). They're really high quality. I just put all of the info about my business on the cards, and I hand them out on cars at bus stations, malls, etc. It's worked out really, really well for me, and it's completely inexpensive =)

If you do not want to start a business with $$$, then invest your time & talent. Get a company who appreciate your talent and neg to them on a commission basis. Work as if it is your own company and take profit sharing. When you finally build up your wealth, then come out to expand your business on your own or share with this friend who lend you a helping hand when you are down with no capital.
