Starting from scratch is going to be expensive, equipment etc. Look for an existing business for sale.
As part of the goodwill they should point you in the right direction as far as registration with the local Environmental Health, their suppliers and local trends and businesses that could be potential customers as well as any competition.
Whichever way you choose to start up you will need at least the Food Hygiene Certificate.
There may well be start up grants available contact your local Chamber of Commerce to check on these or if you are under 25 years you may qualify for a grant from the Princes Trust, again the Ch. of Comm will know.
You will need to register with the Inland Revenue as self employed, this is just a phone call and a form to complete and also self employed NI contributions, about £9 per month.
Employee and product liability insurance, but this is only a few pounds a month.
A good accountant will save you a lot of heartache and save you hundreds of pounds
There are many highs and lows in working for yourself, if you need any further info, don`t hesitate to e mail me
Good luck. |

Go to http://www.score.org/index.html and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to discuss starting your sandwich shop.
SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors. |

You must keep accounts so get yourself booked on a one day seminar held by your local Tax Office for self-employed and small businesses. They will tell you about all the essential accounting stuff. Next it is all about location and marketing and costs. Remember the costs are all your outgoings to get the business up and running (including your salary) and that the fixed costs are exactly that whether or not you are making any money so do not get get stuck into a long-term lease until your business model is working. |

Well this is a business near and dear to me. I was raised in the food business. You should look at why you are starting this business first. What is your true motivation and commitment. Then you either need to invest in a business consultant, or do your own research. There are a lot of books in most book stores on the basics. You may want to consider taking some cooking classes and/or hospitality classes at your local college. Of course, this depends on your experience. You should consider a business plan to help you too. Feel free to ask more questions.
