This depends on your approach. First, do you have an existing service or product that you want to sell online? If you do, and you believe it's viable and with relatively little competition, then bringing it online may potentially be more lucrative than starting off with someone else's "business in a box" plan. If you're planning to go the latter route, a good test for legitimacy is to ask some questions...
1) Is this an actual product or service that you would want to use even if you weren't signing up for the "business opportunity"
2) Is it reasonably priced, or over-inflated to pay commissions to all the affiliates? Compare it to some competitors to find out.
3) Are you getting all the information up front so that you can make an informed decision? Or is some of the language vague, in a sort of "curiousity approach" to get you to sign up just so you can find out the big secret?
That's all I can think of for now. Feel free to pick my brain some more via messaging.
Anyway to start your OWN business, at a minimum you will need...
1) A website, meaning your own domain name and a web hosting service. You can get both at VERY low, reasonable prices from GoDaddy.
2) A way to process purchasing transactions. A business account from PayPal is also free, and they're transaction fees are similar to a "real" merchant account... as of now, 30 cents plus 3%. The advantage of a Business account as opposed to Premium or Personal is that your site visitors can pay with major credit cards, not just PayPal.
3) Consider what other products would make good add-on or accessory sales to your chosen niche, and sign up for affiliate programs or perhaps Google AdSense to gain additional revenue that way.
