Do you have some old books that you could set up a book shelf with or know of a place you can get used books cheap? I would suggest setting one up with a sign out sheet and a way to contact the customer. Let them take the book for a week and then return it. It will encourage return visits and they can read while they are there as well. Make sure you have plenty of space for people to sit and enjoy. Another great way to get ideas it to put up a suggestion box, who better to know what your customers want than you customers suggesting things. |

If it is a coffee shop selling drinks.
Make sure there is a good smell of coffee going outside the shop to draw people in, also if you can get a little bread maker and offer fresh baked bread on your menu, Both off these smells are famous for selling houses so will draw a lot more passing trade in, then they become regulars.
Make the prices reasonable.
Smile but not over done, as that looks false, and greet anyone who comes in even if you are busy, you can say hello I will be with you in a minute, people don't like being ignored or feeling invisible.
keep the place spotless, including table tops after customer has left.
Use relaxing colours for your decor,
If it is a coffee shop selling ground coffee.
Make sure there is a good smell of coffee going outside the shop to draw people in,
Have plenty of warm looking pictures of coffee beans, and cups of steaming coffee around.
get some local and specialist grocery products that make your mouth water to sell if you are allowed. There is a great shop in Tavistock, Devon I can't remember the name but if you are ever near there it would be worth a look, it has a marvellous selection for sale. |

The best way to attract customers to a coffee shop is cheaper coffee, Starbucks, Costa etc are all pretty extortionate and many people enjoy coffee shop coffee but can't afford to buy it very often.
Comfortable seating and relaxing decor is good too, perhaps get some potted plants in, and free newspapers if you can get them.
Sources: I drink a lot of coffee in a lot of coffee shops. |

It depends whether you want to make it "unique" or "seem unique." good marketing can put a spin on your business and get you some business. Word of mouth is the best viral marketing so i suggest selling a mean cup of coffee. You could run a promotion on certain days (quiet days so that trade picks up) and come up with a gimmic like putting a pot of sweets on every table with an order. It will give the customer something to talk about and remind them of their chldhood (happy days) which could give them positive associations with your coffee shop. |

My favorite coffee shop offers traditional table and chair seating, soft, comfy furniture type seating, great lighting, newspapers, and free wireless connection. It's a great spot to relax or perhaps work on your laptop. |
