My wife is Oneness Pentacostal. If you don't know, they were skirts that go down to at least their ankles. They do this for modesty reasons. Religion aside, she can find no stores where we live that offer this style of dress. I recently gave her the idea of starting her own clothing line. How would we be able to put this into production? I need a website maybe or a list of things to get going on to be able to succcessfully (from mechanics point of view) start a clothing store where I live. Any ideas or info on this?

Running a retail store and manufacturing clothing are two completely different business models. I would pick one. It is much easier (and less expensive) to run a store than to start a clothing line.
If you want to start your own line, I suggest starting with www.fashion-incubator.com . F-I is a website for start-up designers/apparel manufacturers. You will need to find a designer, a pattern maker, a factory to sew the clothing, suppliers, labels that meet government standards, and a distribution chain. Product lifecycle is 18-24 months from concept to store.
If you want to open your own store, there are trade shows that cater to specific market segments and you may be able to find a manufacturer or two that produces modest clothes. Keep in mind, that if you open a store, there should be a demand (other than your wife) for this type of clothing. It would help to know the population of the area and what percentage of that population will be purchasing this type of clothing. This will help you when you calculate operating expenses. |
