How do I tell a customer that prices are raised?
I am a sketch artist and recently I have had more of a demand, so I need to raise the price. How do I let current customers know this without them being scared off? What is the best tactic? Wait until it's time to pay or tell them upfront?

Jessica H
Be very honest and upfront. They want to know what they will be paying. When they come in, greet them and say due to the high demand we have raised our prices to accomadate. If They are insterested in the painting, they will understand and continue with a possible purchase. However if say the price is 500 and it went to 1000 over night, I doubt anyone would be intrested no matter how much they like the painting. So be conservitive. Goodluck!!

Just tell them...I dunno...decide what to do with someone who knows a lot about money and everything...LOL...

Upfront, or you could include a printed price list with their latest project at old price.

I guess you can tell them that your schedule is tight and you appreciate their business but you are forced to increase prices to cover certain expenses(if you in fact are) such as a bigger studio, or an assistant, or better quality material/furniture or something of the like that is truly affecting you. And that since your business is increasing you will have to put priority on loyal customers.

Tell them as soon as you can. Via a letter prior to their next project, you don't want to bill them with an increased fee w/o prior notice, you want to be as professional as possible.

I know some small business owners that send out cards prior to the raise in price to let clients know. It's nice and thoughful letting them know in advance and if it turns out that some people can no longer afford your prices it gives them time to look elsewhere. They rarely if ever lose clients and the clients appreciate the honesty and " heads up."

Apologize and tell the truth. Your cost of doing business is going up. Inflation in the US is very high.

Good luck.

Be honest and sincere. Maybe offer to do something to show your appreciation.
