How do I tell my boss of 11 years I have found a new job?
I have been working at the same job for 11 years. I do a lot of different things. I am a office manager for an appt. complex and I take care of his contruction buisness. I have had a job offer making a little more money and benifits. It is a no brainer that I should take the new job but how do I tell my boss. And don't say "I quit" I am going to work out atwo weeks notice. Help!!!!!

Hmm..I've faced this situation also, though I work in a different area. It takes quite a bit of courage. Here's what I've learnt so far:

First of all, make up your mind completely if you want to leave. But even if you can't, talk to your boss and let him know of the offer (I did it). Actually, you may be surprised, but I'm sure YOUR BOSS MAY BE WILLING TO MATCH OR BETTER THE OTHER OFFER!!! You've been with him/her for 11 years so you know quite a few things about the job and it' s hard to replace you!!! THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME....

MOST IMPORTANT - Don't burn bridges. Don't try to remember all the times that your boss was mean to you and don't go storming into the office.....that's foolish...you've been with the boss 11 years, don't waste all that.

Make calculated moves...don't let emotions in....keep in mind that you're not the first one who's leaving a job after 11 yrs....there have been millions who've left after 15, 25, 40 years!!! tell your boss that you'd still love to work there but the other place is giving you such good offer which you really need now. Tell him/her that you'd still be happy to be there for two more weeks and train any new recruit as you've been there so long.

Keep a counter-offer in mind. He/she WILL ask you what it would take for you to stay back, and at that time you HAVE to have a good number in mind so you don't regret wasting that opportunity later.

GOOD LUCK!! gather courage and talk TODAY or NOW, but talk nicely.

Be honest and say you are leaving as you have been offered more.

But before you do, stop and think. If you have been in one place for 11 years, you probably like it. Think about what you would say if your boss offered you a pay rise (to match the new one) to stay.

Think about whether the new job really IS that good. There is more to working than money. In my opinion happiness is FAR more important. You have to do it every day, so a few dollars doesn't really replace happiness.

Also consider, will you have higher expenses? Will you have to travel further? What would it cost in having to buy dearer lunches (if the place is in the city as opposed to the suburbs)?

Do you have close friends at your present place? Which place has the best chances for advancement? Which is the more stable company? Does the new job have a high staff turnover? In truth, will you miss your old job? Will you have the same autonomy you do now?

It may not be quite the no-brainer you think it is.

And, VERY important, be nice when you leave. Don't tell them to shove it. You may need them for a reference at some later, unknown time. Be as nice as possible, help train your replacement, don't hide or take important files - help transition the new person.

Good luck.

You should start out by thanking him for the opportunity to work for him for all these years, but you feel that this is the best decision for you at this time. Leave contact information with him and let him know that perhaps in the future you will be open to working with him again.

well you tell him that you have enjoyed working at this company and with him and will miss him and all the people there, but you got this job offer some where else and it has benifits and that is what you need it is nothing that you have done to make me leave, but i really would like to take this job and hope that you will understand and give me your best wishes. I am giving you a two week notice so you can find someone else to replace me and i can train them all that they need to know to be as good as i was. I really hope there are no hard feelings ill miss you. And thanks for everything that you have done for me.

"It's been nice working for you but I'm in it for the money, which you don't give me enough of, so I took another job."

Just Me Alone
Well, you don't want to burn any bridges as you never know when you'll need this boss' reference. The best thing is to write a letter that says you've enjoyed (true or not) your time with XYZ Company but the time as come to move on. Explain that you were offered a job with benefits and have decided to accept it. Thank your boss for his leadership and support over the last 11 years and offer to help look for your replacement during the next two weeks. Also, run a search of "resignation letter" for some pointers and sample letters. Check the job sites like Monster and CareerBuilder too. Here's one site that has a good overview and sample: http://www.worktree.com/tb/MB_resign.cfm. Best of luck in your new job.

Let him know ya need to talk, and when you do just be honest with him, just let him know you think it's time for you move on, you appreciate the experience you've gained under his employment...he should be OK with it, but sounds like it may be a bit difficult for him to replace you, so do it ASAP...may hafta pull a speed-training session for your replacement...good luck with your new endeavor...been thru it before as a welder and they all told me "the doors always open if things don't work out"

Be honest to him. Tell him thank you for the employment opportunity he has given you over the past 11 years. Tell him your situation and most likely he will understand and even possibly be willing to offer you more salary to keep you on staff. Be sweet, pleasant and professional about it. You do not want to burn any bridges should your new job not work out just the way you thought it would. Remember the grass on the other side always looks greener until you get there and realize it takes more bull s**t to keep it that way. Sometimes employers are forced to pay better because they can not get anyone to work for them due to how they treat their staff. You don't want to get stuck at a job that you hate to go to every day just for a little extra money.

I think you have to ask him to sit down and tell him that you've found a new position and will be leaving the company in xx number of weeks. There is no easy way around this one if you've decided that the new job is what you want.

Just tell him, give him at least 2 weeks notice.

You are a manager, and managers often give 60 days notice so they can train someone else. It is not required, but it helps.

Hand him a letter of resignation. Tell him that you value the time that you have worked for him. You have been offered a position at another company that gives you more options for your future. No need to tell him that more money and better benefits are part of the transition, he'll probably guess that. If he asks tell him yes, but you can't tell him the details. You might be surprised. He might offer you something even better. Good luck.

You tell it like this:
"Look he hea b**ch, i am sick and tired of seeing yo' as* every day for the past 11 years, i got a new job......b**ch"

lol

something like that

No but seriously, you should say:

"Sir (or maam), i feel as if though i am at a point in my career where i need to explore other options, that is why I have found a new job."

OR

you can just send him an e-mail.
