How do I tell my receptionist that her services are no longer required due to her appearance?
I hired Suzi ( yes with an I) primarily because she was quite attractive and....had a bubbly personality. Well, that has changed. Along with several other employees, she has decided that a gender change is in order. I came to find out that she is taking testosterone injections and has had several surgerys to make her look the way she wants.

While I can understand her need to accept her "real" self, I have a hard time having a receptionist with knock out boobs and wonderful blond hair sitting there with a 5 day beard and a rather husky voice.

No problem. She can't use a computer anyway. I only hired her because of her looks.

Although firing her may get you in a heap of trouble, you can always move her to a different position within the company and hire a newer, hotter receptionist!

On the plus side, suzi's conversion to manhood may put you back under the threashold of women compared to men, and keep you from having to build that new bathroom. If not, just make suzi's new job designing and building it. Tell her if she can't handle it, you'll have to let her go.

Kiwi.
She's allowed to be whoever she wants to be without your consent, even if it is a little creepy. You shouldn't just hire people cause their appearance either Mr Shallow.

shiprepairwoman
Tell Suzi she needs to be clean shaven. Consider promoting to a less public job or learn to deal with your problems with her gender.
Firing her is probably illegal but you can have a dress and grooming standard.

I hope this is a joke.Because if not then you are an asshole and I hope when you fire her, she sues you.

You had better be careful.

You are firing her based on her sexual orientation, which is clearly illegal.

She/he could end up owning the company.

ask a lawyer. u might get sued.

Thats discrimination. You can't fire someone based on their looks. As long as they are dressing the part and doing a good job at what they do, you have no right to fire them because you have a problem with her. She didn't take the job so you could oogle her boobs, thats sexual harrasment. She took the job so she could pay her bills and make a living. How selfish and discusting of you, because you can't get a ***** over her boobs anymore, you want to fire her.
I smell a law suit on your ***.

depending on the policy where you work, it might be illegal discrimination to fire her. where i work it would be illegal. her job performance is the only thing you can legally fire for, and if that hasn't changed, she can make a good case that you had no good reason to fire her. unfortunately most courts and juries do not look at appearance as a reasonable job criteria - if you're not an actress or stripper. so i recommend getting some therapy and trying to accept the new suzi
though i don't belive your post for a minute.

angelr1790
Ha, you get what you paid for... If she does her job then you shouldn't have a problem...

Jillie
Explain to her that you understand that she is going through some changes with her body, but you also need someoen who will come to work clean shaven and if her appearance continues to suffer because of poor grooming that you will have to let her go. Give her a chance though.

<<Just-Me>>
You hired her because of her looks and her boobs? You are exactly the kinf of supervisor that many groups have been trying to get rid of for many years now. You don't deserve to be a supervisor. You should quit and start working in the shipping department yourself. Her decision to change her sex should NOT be a concern of yours. I know, there are still many laws that protect idiotic employers, but that is changing. If you fire her, or demote her, I really hope she takes you to court and sues you for everything you have, and I hope she wins too. You are such a bad example of what a supervisor should be. What gives you the right to hire someone based entirely on looks and/or boob size? That is perverted, and sick.

Be careful! This could end up costing you with a "Civil Rights" Law Suit based on Discrimination of Gender/Sexual Orientation.

Help him/her/it to find an exciting job in the world of carnivals and circuses.

I've dated a few carnies in my time, and they're lots of fun.

son_not_jr
YOU are not allowed to fire her because of this. YOU need to find anthor reason to fire her. YOu will get in soooo much trouble if the receptionist finds out why you have fired her. My suggestion is not to fire her or to find something else to fire her for.

Udontnome (ad space for sale)
You are CLEARLY an egotistical pig, and for this fact~ you DESERVE to have to KEEP "Suzi" (yes with an I) and with a beard and with a husky voice.

This will be a reality check to You~ to show You that even a woman is a better man, than You.

You obviously have a very small penis.

daniel g
you have to find other ways to sack her if you sack her on the grounds of her appearance she could sue you and you will lose out big time
make her redundant

Agent 40
I think she would had her boobs removed long ago! I think she is having a hormonal inbalance problem. Really doubting your authenticity of the part she is getting injections!

Fire yourself!

She/He fooled you if she/he was a MALE all along!

A sex change is her choice but pleeez! Contact a layer or someone who you trust for legel council. Ask them what you can and cannot do regarding discrimination in the case of sex(gender). Base your decision on what you find out as to how to go about telling her she is no longer needed.

darowdomo
Oh my! Unless you don't mind getting sued, If I were you I would come up with something else.

forgive me for laughing, thats the best description I've heard for a long time.maybe you should offer a bonus for the sexiest female receptionist, and tell him/her to get a shave

Advisory Service
Change the company's policy, all reception must not change appearance or change voices according to company's standard.

Ask her to sign the new company's policy, if she doesn't change then you fire her.

a private sector employer can pretty much hire and fire as he or she pleases and a discharged employee usually will have no legal recourse even when the discharge is unfair or unreasonable.

Any employee in the state of Georgia (and some other states-you didn't say what state you are in), may be employed at the will of an employer, and can also be fired or terminated at any time without cause.

Maybe give her a razor as a gift? lol or move her to a back office somewhere and give her some typing to do so she's not in the public eye??

Contact an attorney. Discriminating against (firing) a person because of their sexual orientation (including trans-gender status) is illegal in some states and cities. Even if it's not prohibited by a specific statute, there are likely to be serious legal issues that arise.

You need to contact an attorney. No advice you get on Yahoo is worth more than what you're paying for it.

And yes, I agree with the other folks here that you are an insensitive, obnoxious person that I'd never want to work with.

One more thing: your posting this question is a public record, and if there is a lawsuit, there is a significant chance that it will be used as evidence against you in court. Therefore, don't follow the advice to find some other "pretext" to use in firing this person.

It's a hard question to answer. Call her/him and have a conversation. Make things clearer. Tell him/her that why exactly did you hire her/him and what are the requirements. I am sure she/he would understand.
