You should be able to do a search with the Secretary of State for assumed business names.

If you are planning to incorporate your business, then you will want to contact the Secretary of State where you live. Check the internet for their website. When you get a contact number just call and tell them that you are wanting to check the "availability of the corporation name......". They will be able to tell you if that name is taken or not, but can't guarantee you can have it. If they say it isn't taken you will want to file your incorporation paperwork quickly so that nobody gets it before you do.

There is a registry of all business in your area. Check on this when you apply for you occupational license with the city, and also check the state registry as well.
