How do i have a business, live at home with parents without putting their house on the line, if it goes wrong?
I wish to start a business at home for myself, but i still live with parents is there a way of having a business and if the business went belly up there would be no risk to my mum and dads house?
Additional Details
Im looking to start a small building company, doing refurbishments etc. How would i go about doing this properly not to put my parents at risk. Would i need to rent a premises for the office to put the business name in? and then with regards to say an account with a builders merchants for credit how would that be obtained?

Your parents' house would only be at risk if you took out a bank loan to start your business and your parents put their house up as security on the loan.

As long as you don't own the house, and your parents don't give it as security for a loan, there is no risk whatever.

Why would your parents home be in danger? What sort of business are you planning to run?

I wouldn't run anything that required customers to be on the premises to trade with me. Then there's no issue of liability. In other words, it should be something internet, mail based.

Also, unless your parents use their home as collateral to finance your business, I don't see the risk.

If you want to start a private limited company you can usually pay a solicitor or a virtual 'secretary' type company to use their address as your registered company address. These services usually cost around £100-150 per year. I've used one called Duport Associates (www.duport.co.uk) in the past. They're probably not the cheapest so shop around.

Some of the advice you've already been given is not quite accurate. If your company needed to be liquidated for whatever reason or if you were a sole trader and you declared yourself bankrupt having your registered office as your parents home could cause them quite a bit of grief.

It all depends on what kind of business u are planning on embarking on.

Let us know and you can have more advice.

Only if you parents sign fo collateral, otherwise you have nothing to do with their belongings whatsoever.

The residence where you live as no importance.

Pat
do you need some accountants advice??

give me a call

If your name is not on your parents' house, nothing you do will put their home at risk.

go to a bank and apply for a limited business account care of a post office box address , mail can be redirected from your PO box to your home without creating a financial link ,

experian and the like will try to create a financial link between you and your next door neighbour if they can for no other reason than his credit history might be worse than yours and so they can justify to credit companies why they can hit you with interest rates that should be illegal !

it is good that you consider your parents and i hope you succeed , citizens advice and your local bank will help if you ask , good luck .

yes your business is nothing to do with your parents home unless you use it as collateral to raise fund for the business and cant make the repayments

Do not use your parents as a co-signer and do not use their assetts as colateral. If you do either of these it is your parents who are in business and not you. Start small and grow. Good Luck!

their would be on risk to your parents house unless it was being used as security on any money borrowed to start the business, other wise the house is nothing to do with you or your business
