Marketing & Advertising. TARGETED marketing & advertising. Determine who your core customers are, where they are coming from, when they are coming. What image do you currently portray? What would you need to change to appeal to a different clientel? Marketing collateral is very important. What do your menu(s) look like? What impression are they sending? I have worked in restaurants ranging from a greasy spoon to managing a 4-star French restaurant for 20 years, and virtually every place paid very little attention to this aspect of running their business. So several years ago, I started designing menus, table tents, business cards, etc. My website is currently under construction, but take a look for some ideas if you like. http://www.designrestaurantmenus.com |

a lot of it depends on your market.if in a small market, give comp. lunches to local businesses once a week or once a month.go to them and meet the employees, give them coupons for 10-15% off meals (these will be local people who can exponentially increase your exposure you see 10 they see 20 and so on.) pick high foot traffic businesses. give discounts to police, fire, EMS, whoever eats on the go alot.
always PERSONALLY maintain quality control (this means service and food) remember that bad publicity goes 10 times farther than good publicity.
do something that sets yourself apart from the local competition.get a really good acoustic musician once or twice a week.do a TAPAS night once a month.
pick your favorite charity and have a (popular with your demographic) local radio station come in for a fundraiser and prize-giveaway.sometimes you've got to spend it to make it.
if you've been in business for a while you should know that the restaurant business has got to be VERY VERY VERY HANDS-ON don't let anyone run it for you.
talk to your food-service reps. build strong relations with them. they can make or break you.find out what's going on around you.
good luck.if you've been around awhile you don't need this last part because you already know...BE PREPARED TO WORK YOUR #&! OFF !!!!!!!!! |

Make sure your food is the best. Don't cut corners and serve substandard stuff. Have some "signature" dish or dessert that people can't get someplace else. Make sure the place is ALWAYS clean and comfortable! And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make sure the service is the best. When you anticipate your customer's every need people will come back and tell their friends about the place. Offer coupons or vouchers for free appetizers or desserts to people who fill out quality surveys and you'll get some ideas of what people think of your place you can improve. Good luck! |

create a customer survey and offer those that take it a few % off their bill - that gets some cheapos in, but they'll be honest
advertising helps if you do it right

Take a look at your marketing strategies, maybe they need to be increased, changed, or have something added to them.
How is the management team where you are at? Take a look in that area too.
Is your restaraunt clean, have good food, and outstanding service? If not, evaluate why it is not.
And then maybe take a look at your location. Sometimes location is the key factor in foot traffic and business boosting. |

Try some advertising or coupons. Also put technology to use and email your friends to have them spread the word. |

Offer a special in one of those Value Packet envelopes that they send out monthly or make a nice flyer with a coupon, map, and sample menu. Hire some responsible kids to pass them out to businesses (no competitive) and homes in the immediate area. |
