Hi i have just recently started a partime business of in home IT support in my area, i am struggling to decide what to charge for my services.
should i have a call out charge if so what.
I do all kinds of things from Broadband setup/configuration , computer fixes, hardware upgrades, all up to networking and much much more, your help would be appriciated.

well, lets say your probably currently working illegally and without protection.. get some professional liability insurance to start with.. This will be one of your overheads. You are worth something so you have to work out what is worth what and what your life is worth.
You can undercharge for work and you will get loads of calls for services, that good for word of mouth, but wont paid the tax bill and other overheads that you will have. ( like a reliable car and transport costs inc. insurance)
For home users, I charge set fee's for the jobs, for example, virus removal @ £45.00 data recovery @ £5.00 per gig.
Full rebuilds and configurations -£75.00 (includes hardware upgrades but not the hardware)
I did find company directors trying to scam by asking for quotes as a home user. and in some cases home users keep calling for telephone support which is hard to recover the costs..
I would suggest putting up a website with some sort of payment system for them. Pay pal should work or no-checks.
You need to check the value and the costs of other suppliers in your area, most will have hidden charges like lowish rates +VAT Or travel costs or admin fee..
If you charge an hourly rate, some people will complain that you drew out the process in order to charge them more. Or you could find that you are doing a small job that takes ages because there systems are so slow.
I have never charged a call out charge, BUT then when I quote them the costs to see them is included. but its a set fee so customers know what they are going to pay in advanced. but you should know in general how long a job will take to do, some are quicker some are slower.

Phone a few in the same line and see what they are charging.
Have some trade cards ready and distribute them as you gain customers, be aware that there are some daft blighters out there who would charge the earth and don't have a clue, so a steady built up referral system would be good, keep records of your customers and what you latterly charged them, only increase to these people on a yearly percentage basis with inflation costs.
Never underestimate your worth, gaining higher ground as time passes. |

ok. this is up to you and what your happy with...
the thing with any business is ' there are lots of people doing it.. and if you get too dear then people wont hire you..
this is how we do it..
clients who want your services now.. put them on a good rate [work out what your happy with] and stick to that price structure with them
then as you get a bit busier. you can up your rate to the new clients slightly..
the work you are doing now is like an investment for your future work. but stay low in price for your client base now, and they will ensure good word of mouth advertisemant for your business.
say you do a days work for somone.. how much money do you want for a days work? 50 quid? 100 quid?.. that bit is up to you..
dont try to draw a price because its a going rate.. your a new business, and to draw clients in you need to be reasonable with your price structure... find an hourly rate that your happy with... we work for 12 pounds an hour.. plus any extras.. fuel etc.. downloading etc..

Get customers.
Get more customers.
Get too many customers.
Raise rates and keep raising them until some customers go away or quit calling you.

Don't undersell yourself. If you want to be taken seriously, charge a serious price. Customers can be just as averse to services that are too cheap as they are to those that are too dear. As has been mentioned, £30 an hour does seem to be about the going rate.
What is more important with any business than price is the quality of what you do. Even if you undercut your competitors, if you don't do a good job you'll only work for a customer once and word will spread that you're not worth hiring. Charge a reasonable rate and do an outstanding job and your reputation will spread quickly and the work will be there for you.
You say that you're starting a part-time business. Just because it's part-time doesn't mean it's not a business, so be businesslike in what you charge. It means that when you decide you want to run it as a full-time business you have your pricing structure set at a level that you can live on.

Do you know what others in your field are charging? As a small single person business, most companies would expect to pay less for your services than they would for a large company because you have less overhead and costs to cover.
Price yourself to high in the market, and you will have lots of free time. Price yourself to low in the market, and you will work non-stop.
Call some similar companies in size and service and act like a potential customer. Ask them for their fee structure. |

You charge whatever your customers will pay.
If you set your charges to high then no-one will bother
If too low then either customers will think you are rubbish or you will have too much work to handle and not make a decent profit.
I would say a callout charge of 25-30 would be enough and then an hourly rate of 20ph charged by half-hour.
But...... you have to work out what you need to survive and make a profit with.
If you are only getting 2 or 3 jobs of a couple hours each then you will be bust in a week.
Unless you are in the middle of nowhere then there are bound to be other similar business you can check against. At worst give PC world a call and find out what their callout and hourly charges are.
