It is not possible to protect ideas but rather the representation of that idea.
To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent
NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo

In the USA, you can patent an idea via the USPTO. Buy a good book on the subject first. Its advisable to use a Patent Agent.
Don't disclose your idea to anyone else without making them sign a 'Non-Disclosure Agreement' first, otherwise the idea is treated as being placed in the public domain. In the US, if you disclose it without an agreement, I think you then have 1 year to patent it. Some countries won't patent an idea at all, if it is in the public domain.
The site tells you what things you can and can't patent.
Be wary of 'Invention Companies' that offer to help you patent your idea. They will almost always tell you your idea is a good one and worth patenting, just so they can charge you their fees. |

Then of course you need to apply to the patents office. |

go to qwestdex.com look up patent lawyers. that is the easiest way is to higher a lawyer to help you with your research. Otherwise it is a long and lengthy process. |
