Do a google search is the easiest and cheapest way, otherwise you will have to check with every local commerce dept and may still miss something. If you can't found it on Internet, it may still likely already taken by somebody; but the the companies with that name will be so insignificant and you can claim that name yours. Better yet, try to register that name domain, eg. xxxx.com, xxxxinc.com, xxxxcompany.com, etc. |

I would first go to www.Manta.com and search. That will show you most businesses in the country. Afterward, I would just do a Google search. |

use the check availabilty tool that google offers. Check your analytics and traffic suggestions and you should be fine. |

I would search around Google a little and sort of look for a directory of business names that would be what your looking for. |

In Ontario Canada, We have to register our business at a government office. They charge about $50 and require that you do a search on the name. You are allowed to have the same business name as others, (i.e. Speedy Printers, Reliable Cleaners) unless you are violating their trademarked name, (i.e. Coca-Cola, Microsoft.) |

Go to your county building or where ever your county requires you to register your business name. They will have all of the business names that are listed in your state. The only problem is if a business is an INC., LLC, CORP.; they are registered with the state and the county build or the local place you would register you name at would not be able to look that up. You would have to call you state government to fine that information. If you call a lawyer who deals with the legal work for business they usually have a data base to check all states. This will cost you but is well worth the money to make sure you are doing things right. Just be careful because if a business has a service mark on there name and you live in one state and they live in an other state and fine out you are using there name they can take legal action on you for using there name. |

The Secretary of State charges you $10 to buy your trade name. If someone else has it, you can wait to see if they renew it. If they don't pay to renew, it is yours.
Most of the time you can just use any name you want as long as it isn't Circuit City or Best Buy or Disney. No one cares about you. Even if someone has already paid the $10, that doesn't mean you can't use the name. But you would have to stop using it if the other person complained. |

Well there are plenty of business that have the same name.
for instance google the word Chesapeake business.
you will see there are tons. There is no law preventing you from having the same name.
If you go on to get your business Incorporated or become and LLC you might have to add a unique name, but you don't have to use it on your signage or marketing. |

These days, if a name doesn't get any hits on Google, the chances are pretty good there's no such company.
You might check company directories such as the Thomas Register or Hoover's at your local library just to be sure. Or just check their online Web sites to see if the company name you're interested in exists in their databases. |

you do a name search with the state you are in.
One thing called Nuans. Only thing is it charges a lot per search. So you better do research on google and yello pages. |
