tipalmqueen33706 | How do you handle a new co-worker with b.o..! Especially in a salon? My employees have brought this ? to me? |
She's a mature stylist with very respectable clients. I think shes nice and fits in well with the other 7 stylist. Just the body odor. I've been fortunate never to have had this problem. |

Be a sweet co-worker & ask her what scents she likes. Then, go shopping for personal stuff with her. Give her a gift of body wash & maybe some bubble bath & bathing items. |

It's going to be hard but you and her need to sit down and you need to tell her. Start out with how wonderful she does, how you appreciate everything and lead into that it has been brought up by some people about her body odor.
Good Luck!! |

You - or someone in charge - are going to have to take her aside and tell her that there is a small problem. Do it very privately in a room with the door shut. I wouldn't mention that anyone has said anything to you about it, that will just embarrass her really bad. She's going to be embarrassed enough, don't make it worse.
I would say something like this,
Jane there's a small problem that I need to make you aware of. I've noticed that sometimes I can smell a little body odor when I'm really close to you. I wouldn't mention it but in this business we have to be really aware of that sort of thing since we work so closely with our clients. |

Tell her politely. |

Are you her boss/supervisor or co-worker? If you are a co-worker speak to your superior unless it falls under your duties. If you are the superior step up, be the boss, and have a private conversation with her. You are in a service business and people are not going to want to get their hair cut/styled by someone who smells. I'm surprised that she brought in clients with her if it's that much of an issue. (Or does she just have that strong "old person" smell?") :) |

you can say this "JANE DOE, I respect you and your work emensly. You are an assett to this company and we adore you.
There is a concern that has been brought up to my attention.
As you know, Salons have guidlines to stick to for health (DHEC) reasons. Complaints have come about your distinguished odor. Now, I am in no way saying your personal hygiene is an issue. However, being that we work so closely to our clients, I feel it would be beneficial for you to be aware of it and try to address it.
Please understand, I only have the best interest of this business in mind, and am not trying to offend you. If you need anything else, just let me know. I am here to help you as well as this business."
or something like that.

This is can be an extremely sensitive subject. First off it pays to be aware that some people are allergic to deodorants, perfumes, etc. and have no choice but to go all natural. If this is not the case then since she is new I would put together a small "welcome" gift basket which would include bath & body wash, deodorant, and body sprays or a gift certificate to bath & body works so she can pick out her own stuff.
This is a gentle hit but she should get it because I doubt that this is the first time she has ever had this issue arise. If the problem persists - I would follow up with her and say "how did you like our gift basket or what did you end up buying with the certificate?"
This can be done in a gentle and sensitive way - think about this..
If you were the person with BO how would you want to be told? What if you had a medical condition or was on a medication that caused the BO and deodorant did not work. I hope all goes well and the situtation gets resolved.

Well you HAVE to pull her aside and speak to her about this! You will loose business and other good stylists if you don't! |

i think its best you just tell her, theres no point in trying to drop hints because once she cops the hints she'll think it was all a laugh behind her back, your best to be honest.................. |

have a meeting with the employees and tell them that there has been customer complaints on a certain stylist (dont say the name) but that they smell, then everyone will worry.. even her...and she will get clean... |

this is SUCH a sensitive subject... my advice would be to put a memo up to all employees simply stating that u are proud at how well things are going and so on but u just wanted to give a few reminders and put personal hygiene in as one of them. if that doesnt work pull her aside after hours and IN PRIVATE talk 2 her about it.. hope this helps |
