First of all, if you are the boss, you may need to assign people to the task and not wait for them to volunteer.
Now for the hard part, you may motivate them first and foremost by keeping one of the tasks of the job for yourself and letting them know that you are not dropping this on them, you just need help. You may also motivate them a little more by:
(1) explaining to them the importance of the task and why they are the best people to help you with the job (you chose them because they were trustworthy, diligent workers, great team players, etc.;
(2) letting them know how much you appreciate their ability to be part of a team and their capabilities for performing hard tasks under pressure;
(3) letting them know how this will be reflected on their performance reviews and performing projects like this is a way of helping to groom them for leadership positions down the road.
It is not always easy being a motivator but you, as a leader, must get done what needs to be done while trying to be a mentor and motivator.
Good Luck. |

They don't "want any part of it"??
They don't have a choice. Leadership means having to be tough when needs be, as well as considerate if necessary. |

Carrots or whips. You can bribe them with things like flattery, beg them or order them. If you are the boss you can just tell them this needs done and hand out the assignments. Tell them when it is done you will buy them all pizza. Tell them it needs done and you are counting on them because they are really good at making sure the work gets done.
If your people are really busy and the work is really boring consider hiring a temp. |

Tell them their hours will be cut because you have to hire a "temp agency" |

Offer an incentive to help with the project. Extra pay for hours worked, extra earned time off.
my boss offered extra pay for an especially difficult client to work for plus the extra distance to drive.
like she said
have them compete
start off small though |

Put them on piece work if it is possible - the more they work the more they earn. |

Problem lies with you. You are a no-good manager. Look where you are trying to find help....Fire yourself and let someone else take over from you - you are clearly one of the longer-than-20-years people there. Move over and make way for someone fresh and new. |

Sounds like you are not a very inspirational leader if no one wants to impress you or please you. And, where is your power?
I think this might go deeper than this one task. Maybe you should invest in a few books (who moved my cheese? One minute leader, Zig Zigler, etc.) |

I always found that leading by example works best. I was not willing to assign a task to someone that I wasn't willing to do myself. Helpout with the project as much as your other duties allow and express to them how much you depend on their abilities. However, if they don't want to respond and perform their assigned duties document everything, termination may be the only alternative. Ultimately it's your neck on the chopping block.
The other issue as I see it is your boss. He is sending mixed messages to you by telling you to motivate but then approving of making threats. I believe in being firm but fair. I have a gut feeling that you better watch your back on this one because to 20 year employees and your boss have a history together. |

Incentive. A reward of $$$ money makes people really want it. Without that, they don't care if someone else gets rich off their hard work or not. |

this is too easy. you hire some one that will, there are so many people that need a job. i can not imagine being in some ones employ and telling them what or what i won,t do.unless it is illgeal or inmoral. |
