Wal-Mart moves its operations into towns where small businesses thrive. Because they sell virtually everything they take customers away from those small businesses in the area. The mom and pop store looses money and has to shut down. But hey, we opened up a ton of jobs didn't we?! (sarcasm) |

Wal-Mart has an unbelieveable effect on the economy. They are almost solely responsible for keeping inflation less food and energy nearly flat. Also Wal-Mart is so efficient they prevent inefficient firms from existing allowing resources to be used in the most efficient ways making the economy grow much faster with Wal-Mart than without. Small businesses don't have to compete with Wal-Mart, then can cater to a more upperclass customer wich will prevent them from competition. |

WalMarts offer very tough competition for small businesses.
For a small business to survive, it is important to focus on a niche and do not try to be like Walmart which offers everything to everybody. Specialize on a particular product line/groups and be the best in it. Then offer the best customer service.
An example of how to go about it is the approach used by Tony Roeder of RedWagons.com http://www.powerhomebiz.com/onlinesuccess.htm . Because Walmart and ToysRUs only offer a limited number of Red Flyer wagons, he decided to carry almost the full inventory and focus on that entirely. And he's been very successful - he was even featured by Yahoo Stores and that's where I saw him and interviewed him.
The article "10 Ways Small Businesses Can Compete With the Big Boys" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol113/compete.htm offers tips on how a small business can compete with the WalMarts of the world (may not always be successful, but gives small businesses a fighting chance):
1. Provide exceptional customer service
2. Pamper your existing customers.
3. Consider collaborating with similar businesses.
4. Use "loss leaders."
5. Develop a niche and focus on it.
6. Take care of your employees.
7. Use technology to your advantage.
8. Present a very professional image.
9. Emphasize the uniqueness of your products.
10. Give your store character.

I work for Wal-Mart and send people to small businesses all the time. When a Wal-Mart opens in a small town many other businesses open around it. Don't belive me?...go look around any Wal-Mart in any small town. The people that work at Wal-Mart are your freinds and neighbors. I'd say it benefits the small business by default. The one's that claim to be "crushed" by Wal-Mart are usually crushed by thier own weight. |

We can't just blame Wal-Mart. Search corporations and the influence on society. |

more people would buy from wall amrt due to lower prices
seeing as though wall-mart buys in large quantaties they get it for a lower price and can afoord to sell it for much cheaper than any small buisness. the only way a small buisness can stay open would be to lower its prices to match thoose of wal-mart and that would actually cause them to have little to negative profit |

It depends on what you sell, how big of a town you're in and how important your store is to the people in your town. |

When Wal-Mart goes into a town they set their prices lower than all the local stores, until they all go out of business. Then they raise their prices and no one has anywhere else to shop. Wal-Mart is evil. |
