How far to you take loyalty?
I've been working at the same job for 8 years. They've beena great company to work for and I've becomes friens with my bosses. But the company is going under. Today they said that they're going to start fireing people just to make payroll. I've already taken a 20% pay cut. I know I won't be fired because there is no one else that can do my job. And the boss begged me to hang in there. So, how long do I hang in there? I live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to lose more money.

joey,
do you get 'days off'??? cuz on those 'days off' if I were you, I'd get my job resume all brushed up on and get the cob-webs off of it, and sharpen it up some, changing what cha need too, and start putting it back out there.......... don't settle for less $$$ At a new job,,,,,,, ask for what your worth....and then stick to your guns about it.
Ask for a letter of recommendation,,,,,, be yourself,,,,,,, be honest, get letters of reference from co-workers, and friends, while your still in this current job,,,,,cuz you feel its just a matter of time and you'll be looking for a new job anyway. Its ok, to ask, and its ok to be nervous about it,,,, remember there is always Unemployment till you get back on your feet.
ANd just think ??? If they don't fire ya, then you've done some pre-planning, and your that much ahead of the game....for if that day does come.... and besides that you get to see just what your co-workers and friends really think about cha.
lol LOL lol................................... " Keep Smilin"

You are always working for yourself first. You took a paycut, and that was enough.

The fact that you've already taken a pay cut and are living paycheck to paycheck.....begging you to stay when the ship is sinking is selfish on your bosses part, taking advantage of a friendship, if you want my opinion. Of course they want you to stay! But you need to try and start finding something now, while you still have a job rather than waiting. In the long run, you have to do what's best for yourself and your future.

Oh Nooooo!
I would never be loyal to a company. They want you to "hang in there", but where is their concern for you? There IS NONE. You need to look out got your own best interests and abandon this sinking ship as soon as you have something else lined up. Start looking NOW.

You start looking for another job. It's not easy emotionally, but give them fair notice and they can't reasonably hold a grudge. You've gotta pay your bills and eat, ya know?

Loyalty to a company is admirable, however...

You have to do what is best for you as well. If this is a temperary situation, and the company is likely to come back from it, then you might hang in there in the hopes that the company will reward you with a fat raise when they come back. (Good luck with that one, in my experience it won't happen that way.) However, if the company is, as you say, going under, then you won't have a job once the company tanks anyway, time to start looking and putting your resume out there.

Loyalty to a company is all well and good, but you have to ask if the company is being loyal to you as well. That door swings both ways.

If you can't afford to live, you can't afford to live.

It might be your job to work, and perhaps you should be loyal to them (I don't really believe in loyalty in the work place...I work for money, not for friends), but it is their job to make sure they run their business well enough to pay you. Their loyalty to you should extend not only to keeping you employed, but paying you well.

20% less pay? Suggest to your employer that you work 20% less time because you need to find a part time job to make up the difference. What's he going to do, chew you out for making ends meet?

hang in there but if they pay you more or ask for a severance package. Either way find another job soon. When it comes to money there is no loyalty. I am a business owner over 12 years this rule apply to most bosses, employees and customers. I sure they appreciate you and treat you nice; however getting pay less money is not the right way to treat an employee. Its not your fault that they made so many mistakes to put the company where is at so you should not have to pay for it; You already are!

Ask for a buyout! Find some better employment if you don't have the confidence that you'll have a job with them in the future. The question of loyalty is more difficult to answer. You have to be loyal to both you and your bosses.

Good luck!

Time to hunt for another job while the ship is taking on water. If you wait till she sinks, you are sunk as well.

Put your life preserver out there and see who throws you a line. Once a line is tossed, BAIL SHIP.

Loyalty is one thing but you are just an employee as well. Take yourself out of the friendship picture and then give yourself advice mate!

To the sound of it the time has come to start lining up interviews for your next job. It does suck, but you have already sacrificed income. You are going to hurt your own pocket if you let them run you emotionally - sad but true.

If you leave and they sink faster than planned, well, they might be friends or friendly with you now, but there will be no sentiment when they close the doors and let you out on the road to look for something else.

When the writing is on the wall, it is time to read or learn fast!
