tuthutop | How much commission? |
I have made some rather nice checker boards (suitable for chess and checkers) and I'm thinking of selling them in a 'gift' shop. I'm thinking of asking £40 a piece for them. What proportion do the shops normally expect for displaying and selling the item? |

There's 2 ways to go about this, sell them outright to a shop at wholesale price (which you determine yourself based on time, labor, material costs and expected profit), and they will mark them up to whatever they think they can get for them...
Or, perhaps you can sell them through the shop on consignment, where YOU set the selling price, and pay them a consignment fee upon each sale. Usually something from 10% to 20% of selling price.
Depending on how well they sell initially, the fee may be adjusted up or down, depending on how long they "hang around" the shop before getting sold. The seller can suggest a selling price based on what they know of their customer base.
Of course there's a bit of trust involved, so seek a well-known and hopefully highly reputable seller, and don't enter into an agreement that is too long-range; you could end up getting locked into something you may later regret. |

standard retail mark-up is x3 i.e. three times the price paid wholesale for the goods. |

Hi there
I'm not sure how much shops would charge but you can sell your boards on ebay for listing fees as little as approx 30 cents.
If you haven't sold on ebay before please let me know and i can get you set up. |

Ask the shops then negotiate, you have to balance costs with profit this applies to them and yourself. |

40-50%
So they would have to retail them
67-80 pounds. Sounds high.
Maybe 5% discount 30 days,
if they "Buy" them.
They may only try them on consignment. |

Yeah i agree, sell them on Ebay at a fixed price, there's a big audience there. |

most shops work on 50% mark up .so you to sell it to them for £27 or there abouts |

most shops wouldn't accept commission unless you're putting them in on consignment, risky as although I'm sure they will look after them its not their care and the display position will not normally be in a good position as they have their own goods to display. If you're asking £40 for them then i would expect them to sell around £60-£80 if they are in that class of merchandise and your packaging or presentation wrapping or boxing is first class. I don't want to disappoint you or dampen your enthusiasm but I think only market type shops or those specialising in hand crafted goods would agree to stock your checkers boards as larger retail shops have safety issues to contend with. In saying all this if you're supplying on sale or return or free on show commission expected would be around 20-25%, good luck. |

If you want £40.00 each then that is what the shop will give you. They can put what ever they want on the price. |
