Hi people, i really hope you can help me. I'm trying to set up a website selling items such as men/women clothings, as well as other accessories.
I searched through the other questions posted, but I'm pretty confused about the terms of "domain name" , "hosting" etc. I hope to include an online payment to be possible in my website too.
I wants my web site's name to be independent, like www.gap.com and not tied to websites like geocities which will appear in the name of my website.
Can you please help me?? I would really appreciate all the help I can get! |

You are receiving some valuable suggestions however one and the most important element is missing in all of the answers. You may have the most expensive website or you may have one for free -- if you do not have a steady qualified traffic of buyers, your website may as well be located at the North Pole.
No traffic, no sales, no money. It's that simple. Paying per click can get very expensive for you as there are tons of people making extra pocket money by just clicking, with no intention of buying anything while you have to pay for it.
I am using complete system that drives the traffic to my website 24/7/365 and since I am marketing my products and services worldwide I get up in the morning to find out that my bank account got richer overnight again.

I have many websites but I finally am just about finished with my first website that will have a Merchant Account(credit cards on line). I am just about finished with the entire process and you can probably glean some information. The website is www.websitebargainstore.com Now, this can be set up initially as a free site with free hosting while you take your time and build it just the way you want it.(if that's what you want) And then just add your own private Domain. Just browse the Free Website tab to get an idea. It has a great "self explanatory build it teacher" that is awesome also. You can also go to www.websitelifestyle.com and I will be linking to this site for a more detailed information about the website. My suggestion, and just mine, would be like I said and get the free site and work on it at your own speed before you take it "live" and then move to the next level. You will also see some more good information on the first site. I have 7 other websites hosted with Hostgator which is awesome and I use GoDaddy for most of my Domain names. With a coupon you can get domains for $7.95 and its also a great company to work with. I just hope maybe you can at least take this information and it will help you somewhat. Hi, a great question...
I think I can help you with some ideas.
But first, a domain name is just a name - like Yahoo.com, Google.com, or Gap.com. For example, I registered my own name as a domain name (MartinHurley.com) You want to have one of these domain names... they only cost about $9 a year... and then you can link your website to your domain name...
Don't worry, you'll get your head around it... :) For example, if you have a business that sells women's clothing, you might buy a domain like OutwearClothing.com -- just an example... Or something like Nike.com (But that one is already owned by another cool company!)
Hosting is just somewhere to put your website...
In my case I use http://hurleypix.com/blue
You can go in there and get your site hosted for about $6-7 per month, and you could then do things like set up a blog (like a online diary), or create your own website from scratch.
But I was thinking maybe the best thing to do would be to go to CafePress.com and look at their shops.
They have a basic free shop but I believe they also offer a low cost shop ($15 a month - I think, not quite sure) which you can set up using your own domain name...
This is great because you could use all the CafePress products such as t-shirts and calendars (etc) to 'launch' your own business...
This might be a good way to start... And a little easier than creating a whole new website...

Look into yahoo small business. They walk you through the entire process and their customer service is pretty good. Probably not the best for a complicated advanced web designer due to lack of flexibility but for your first site I think you will like the process. Fairly simple to follow, they perform the hosting and even have the steps for domain registering.
And no, I am not affiliated with yahoo except that I built my first site there and it was a breeze. |

Domain name is just what you have said yourself. Instead of using (e.g. "www.geocities.com/frank"), you can have (e.g. "www.frank.com").
Hosting means that you must have a "place" to display your goods and services, right? That is what hosting means.
Of course, you will have to pay a monthly fee for keeping your domain name and storage space limit, etc. Geocities itself offer such services, as with Google and Microsoft too. Those are big names and I assumed to be "safe". Otherwise, you can approach local ISP and ask about web hosting packages.
