I have two friends who are cigar reps for major cigar manufacturers.
If you want to be successful, the shops with start up capital of between $200K and $250K seem to have the best chance of surviving. Cigar distributors will give preferential treatment to those who place large orders and you will need money to live on.

You have to take into consideration where you live, will that shop have a big enough clientale to maintain a business?
What demographic of people live in your area? is there a big enough group of people who frequent your store?
Could and would you sale a variety of things that would cater to differnt groups of people instead of just one. For example there may only be 2000 people in your area who smoke fine cigars out of 20,000. So you may want to try to sale other things that cater to another 3-4000 people.
The reason behind this is because I was trying to open an espresso shop in my small home town. in order to meet all my overhead I would had to have sold espresso drinks, smoothies, ice cream and lunches to rope in enough people to maintain my shop. I decided not to do it for now mainly because of the wide range of stock I would have to maintain to make it work, The cost was a little too great for the time I was looking to start up.

I think it would be a good idea but it wont bring you ALOT of income. Honestly i would say you would need close to $100,000 to start off. For the Building itself, to fix it up (if it needs it), cigars, stuff for the lounge (seats, tables, drinks, music, etc) then some advertisement. Depending on where you at and if you serve alochol, you will need to get a Liquor License. Some States that can be expensive. I would say 100,000 is not ridiculous. Could be less could be more, also depends on Demographics. |

I've seen some of these cigar lounges start and fail, but some seem to hang in there. Try calling some cigar stores/lounges in urban areas far from you (so you won't be perceived as a competitor?) and talk to the owners' directly about start up costs. Also; keep in mind that this is mostly a luxury item/market. (i.e., it's mostly upper clas guys who like to indulge in this pleasure.) As such; you'll to need to pay higher rent in at least an upper middle class suburb, most likely. (No one wants to travel to the inner city to smoke a cigar these days.) Also, budget for a decent ventilation system and I think you need refridgerated humidors, too? Good luck! |

you'd to spend a good chunk on remodeling the building to include your "lounge" - special wood - lockers - That type of business isn;t exactly high traffic, high volume, high profit - you could also sell cigs and lottery tix, drinks and snacks, put in a Bigscreen Tv - sports, etc |
