Like every other job, the minimum wage. Check the jobcentre page and it lets you know the average wage for jobs, most say the minimum wage.

just trying to make a difference

The starting salary for a receptionist can be between £10,000 and £12,000 a year.
A qualified and experienced receptionist can earn between £17,000 and £24,000.

I'd say somewhere between £10k and £16k depending on experience etc

I'd expect it to be in the range of 14-17k depending on experience.

Well, there are various ways to find out:

1) go to your library and check the job ads in the national and local newspapers for similar positions or functions in your area and in a similar type of business or company. Compare what the salary levels are in those ads.

OR

2) Go to the library and ask the librarian if they have the latest copy of the IDS Pay Benchmark. This is a regular survey of wages across many sectors. (website below). However, it is unlikely that the local branch of your public library will have this publication.

In which case, you could contact the City Business Library in London and ask if they can help (see link below).

It goes without saying that minimum wage legislation must be observed. See the link to direct.gov.

Receptionist jobs I've seen all were in the $8-$10 an hour range. If you had to go to a staffing company they'd be charging you $15 an hour for the person they supply.

Depending on duties, the more they're required to do outside of phones and greeting people, the more they make. Some type letters, some take phone orders, some do filing and help out in various other departments as needed. It's not just sitting behind a phone waiting for it to ring.

Depends on the company and whether your talking hourly or annually.

I've done reception work and been paid £8per hour and worked in others where I was paid £10. My advice is if its paying less than £7.50hr don't do it as there will definitely be someone out there willing to pay you more for doing the same job.

It really depends on what the job entails. Some receptionist jobs expect you to be a pillar to the company and therefore pay $17+ an hour, expecting you to answer 20-line telephones, shipping & receiving of mail & UPS, etc, directing visitors, filing, making travel arrangements, (basically Administrative Assistant's work but titled Receptionist).
Receptionist jobs that simply require you to answer phones and direct mail and visitors usually pay anywhere from $7 - $10 an hour.
Then there are receptionist jobs that require a degree of sorts and they pay very well (usually for Universities or Hospitals).

Normally between 10-14k
