Without a camera this becomes almost impossible. There are many covert types of cameras that the employees will never know are there. |

Hire a private investigation firm. I'm sure they can act as a secret shopper as well as do some surveillance work. Also if you have a professional company do it, when you fire that employee you'll have a better leg to stand on. |

how are you tracking your stock? do you have it automated to track your inventory? if so, you can inventory and determine what was sold that day against what is on hand... |

you can have a mystery shopper come in and see how the sale is being completed. |

Are they stealing from you or from the customer? I would suggest you post a sign that states that if an item is rung up incorrectly you will reimburse the person twice the difference...people will begin to check their receipts and you will know if there is an issue.
Other then that, you will have to rely on the other employees to tip you off. Let them know that you will give them x amount of money if they turn in their fellow coworkers with proof...let them know that you will do it anonomously. |

Stop being cheap and get yourself a camera! |

The camera would not only catch them but be a deterrent
Can you afford NOT to get one? |

It's time to get a camera .. You don't know which one it could be, and it could take a while to get him.
More money is going to be stolen from you while you figure out a plan that won't work.
Get a camera, catch him - and send it to the police office. You've got to have PROOF before you can start blaming someone. The police won't care if you say, "Oh, he's stolen from me, and I know it!"
They're going to want a video of proof. There are many cheap camera's out there that will do the job. |

Its all going to cost a little money or time. Have a complete inventory of your items and a computed tally of all your goods. Inventory your things and count up your money at the end of each employees shift and the one who doesnt match is your man. |

have people you know go in as customers and buy items and have them note what is being rung up.
Macys has a system where what is rung up ($19.99) will show in real time with the surv tape. So if someone rings VOID and puts an item in the bag anyway you can see the deception |

Probably the only way is for you to have a camera aimed at the cash register. I can't think of anyway without a camera, unless you stay at the counter all the time. Good Luck! |

Tough situation to have employees you do not trust. Do you know they make cameras that are fake? They look like real security cameras and would fool your staff and keep them on their toes but do not have the cost involved.
Are your employees responsible for their drawer totals?
I feel for you..I would not want employees around that I did not trust! |

Well, I guess you could hire spies...^^ They'd act as if they're employees an sneek around and spy about..^^
hehehe, but you'd better get a mcamera...its more efficient and long lasting, as well as provides proof... |

make sure items need to be scanned by bar code, NOT entered by price. Make sure only 1 person at a time is on the register
Install FAKE cameras, and tell them in a meeting you are installing the cameras to catch who ever has been stealing, as advised by the policeman you filed a report with
it should stop ASAP |

Have someone you know do some shopping and see if they get rung up right, or if they are shorted. Really do it more then once and with different people. Good Luck. |

Your register should show the amount of each sale which you can compare to your inventory out. If the numbers don't match, the time stamp on the register will let you know what time it occured which should allow you to figure out who was at the register. |

If that was true, the receipts would not match the balance for that till for the employee.
1. Only let one employee use a cash register per till.
2. If you must have 2 or more employees use the same till, kick yourself first and re-read rule 1 above.
3. Make sure employees are strictly informed daily never to let anyone else access their till. |

Have a friend of yours go in and see if they can try to get the sales person to cut them a discount. If you have a female worker then send in a "hot" male customer to flirt with her and try to get the item at a "discount" or just to give it to him. Try it with different people and if that doesnt work then watch the store and when the sales persons friends come in then send the friend in to keep an eye out. |

fire them... Im sorry but if you have a suspicion, terminate them...... I did.. they were not working at the store more than 6 months so due to "budgets" I couldnt keep them on the payroll |

Why don't you want to use a camera? That is going to be the best way. Or you could pretend to leave early or something and then hide and watch them and see if they steal. Also, you should talk to them. Maybe explain to them how honest and trustworthy you think they are and how glad you are that you have such honest and trustworthy employees. (Don't be too obvious, though). this might prick their consciences. If you hide and actually see them stealing, then you should confront them and ask them if/why they are stealing. But you shouldn't accuse them until you are absolutely sure that they are, in fact, stealing. You could also have people you know act as "secret shoppers" and go buy stuff and closely observe your employees and report their findings to you.
Good luck! |

It sounds like you need to go through your receipts each day. Now would be the perfect time to start doing it, it being the beginning of the year and all. Check the item bought, priced charged against your inventory database. If you don't have an inventory database, you might consider installing one.
You can also reassign the employees to various other tasks. This can easily be explained as cross-training, making for better employees. You can also require that employees take a vacation each year. If you notice any differences in your tills during that time, you've got something not working right.
Develop a system of checks and balances to make sure everything is working the way they need to be. |

you can employ a "mole". a family member or friend who can work alongside the suspected employee and watch. perhaps they'll even be offered the opportunity to become involved in the underhandedness? |

Cameras
secret shoppers
checking the register for voids
checking inventory
Cameras are the best!! If they know you are being watched they will stop or be caught. |

Ask someone you know to pose as a new employee and have them pretend to steal in front of the person or people in question. If they are stealing you will know by the reaction, and they may even confess to the fake employee. This could be recorded with a cheap audio device if you wish. |
